Sewage backup can be extremely dangerous to your health. If you are experiencing sewage backing up into your toilets, bath tubs, and showers, it is time to call your plumber. Sewage contains germs such as E. coli, Cryptosporidium, Hepatitis A, and Shigella, so it must be cleaned up and the plumbing system repaired immediately.

While you are waiting for the plumbers to arrive, begin to clean up the area with a solution of one cup bleach to every five gallons of water. Keep children, the elderly, and pets away from the area, and wear long pants, eyewear, gloves and boots. Wash your hands afterwards with soap and clean warm water. You can help keep sewage from backing up into your home by limiting the amount of water going down the drain.

It may be a clog between the shower and toilet, or the waste line may be plugged. Whatever the cause, protecting you and your family from harmful waste needs to be your first concern.

Symptoms from being exposed to sewage may include diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, chills, and vomiting. Seek medical attention right away if you experience any of these symptoms.

You must also clean all items and surfaces that were touched by the sewage, including children's toys, by using use one cup of unscented household bleach to every five gallons of water. Throw away items that cannot be washed and cleaned (such as mattresses, stuffed animals, baby toys, and wood cutting boards) and food that may have come in contact with sewage water.

If the sewage backup is in the shower area, try using a snake. A one quarter inch snake that is 25 feet is you best bet. It will move more easily through the line. You may find that the shower trap gets backed up, while the toilet in the same bathroom does not. This is due to the fact that the toilet trap is typically about six inches above the floor level, whereas the typical shower drain is installed level with the floor.

If you are unable to clear this backup yourself, you must call in professional plumbers. They will be able to clean up the leaked sewage thoroughly, as well as find out exactly where the clog is located. Unless you know what you are doing when you try to do your own plumbing repairs, it is generally wise to let the professionals handle it to begin with.

Rabies- Attacks the nervous system and causes encephalitis. The virus is transmitted in saliva from the bite of an infected animal. It usually takes two-eight weeks before the signs appear. However, it only takes about ten days before it's passable through saliva.

The most common ways for an animal or human to be infected is by a bite from an animal who's infected - usually a skunk, fox, raccoon or bat.

Cats are actually more at risk than dogs - because they put themselves more at risk that dogs.

There are three stages to Rabies:

Prodomal Stage- Lasts two-four days. Signs can include behavioral changes, fever, slow eye reflexes, and chewing at the bite of the site.

The Paralytic Stage- Last two-four days. Signs of paralysis develop, usually beginning in the limb that was bitten. Paralysis of the throat or face causes a change in the bark. Drooling with typical foaming at the mouth, and a dropped jaw. Followed by depression, coma, and death from respiratory paralysis.

Once clinical signs develop there is no treatment! If a pet has been bitten by a wild animal or known related rabid animal - if they've been vaccinated, re-vaccinate them and quarantine them for 90 days. If the pet has not been vaccinated, euthanize and submit tissue for rabies testing. If the owner is unwilling to euthanize the pet, it should be strictly quarantined for six months with vaccination one month prior to release.

Distemper- Greatest single disease threat to the world's dog population. Distemper develops over a course of days. Canine distemper virus is fatal to 80% of the puppies and 50% of the adult dogs that contact it. Symptoms include congested lungs, nasal discharge, vomiting and diarrhea. As it progresses, it attacks the nervous system, often causing partial or complete paralysis and seizures. The disease is highly contagious. Dogs can get the virus through coming into contact with anything another dog infected, including through all secretions of the infected animal and very surprisingly, even through the air.

Most distemper appear in dogs less than six months of age and in old dogs that have not been vaccinated. Once infected, there is no cure. Treatment is supportive -- fluids through I.V to prevent dehydration, and symptoms treated. Dogs who recover from distemper may have vision, nervous system problems, hardened foot pads and nose leathers, throughout their lives. In addition, puppies may also have mottled teeth from damage to developing enamel.

Dogs should be vaccinated, and given boosters, to prevent this disease.

Parvovirus- This disease can overwhelm a dog within hours of first symptoms and result in death within 48-72 hours. It is found through the world, it is highly contagious and attacks the intestinal tract, white blood cells, and sometimes the heart. It is spread with contact through feces of infected dogs. Parvovirus can be carried on shoes, crates, equipment or the hair and feet of infected dogs. Symptoms appear five-seven days after exposure and include depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, severe diarrhea. Feces are generally light gray, or yellow-gray, and may be streaked with blood. Puppies under six months are most susceptible to the disease. If the disease effects the heart, puppies can die within hours, weeks or even months. Doberman Pinschers and Rottweliers appear to be at a higher risk for parvo than other breeds.

There is no treatment that cures the virus. Nursing care consists of replacing fluid, keeping the dog warm, controlling vomiting and diarrhea, and dosing with antibiotics to prevent secondary infections.

Parvovirus can live for several months in an infected area, thorough cleaning of all surfaces is necessary to eradicate the disease. Household bleach is a very effective agent.

Vaccination against parvo has dramatically reduced incidence of the disease. The vaccine protects the dog for several years.

Infectious Canine Hepatitis- It is inhaled or ingested by the dog, enters the bloodstream, and targets the liver, kidneys, eyes, and the cells lining the inner surface of the blood vessels. Some cases barely show symptoms - puppies may show a slight fever or be slightly lethargic and recover quickly.

Some cases are quick and deadly. They may also have tonsillitis, reddened mouth and eye membranes, colic, then shock and death. Sometimes all within 24 hours!

The in-between manifestation of the disease is the one most commonly described. The early symptoms are similar to the other forms - some puppies recover within two weeks, others develop internal bleeding, central nervous system involvement, and liver disease.

There is no cure, only supportive treatment. Vaccination lasts several years.

Kennel Cough- This is a respiratory disease in dogs that covers the actions of several infectious agents, including Bordatella bronchiseptica, a bacteria, canine adenovirus 2, and canine parainfluenza virus.

The parainfluenza virus is related to the canine distemper virus. Symptoms range from hacking cough to inflammation of the larynx, bronchial tubes and trachea. CAV-2 also produces pneumonia in ten-twenty percent of the affected dogs.

They're highly contagious, especially in kennels or shelters where the canine immune systems are stressed. Good ventilation is necessary to prevent and spread diseases.

A combined kennel cough vaccination contains CAV-2, parainfluenza, and Bordatella in one dose of nose drops. Symptoms are no more than a bad cold, vaccination is recommended if dogs are to be boarded, or will come into contact with a large numbers of dogs.

Leptospirosis- This is a bacterial disease spread in the urine of wild and domestic animals and capable of causing illness in humans as well as dogs. Several species of the bacteria produce disease in dogs. Symptoms include lethargy, kidney inflammation, low-grade fever, vomiting, reddening of the mucous membranes, and conjunctiva, and blood clotting abnormalities. A more generalized form of the disease can cause elevated liver enzymes, jaundice, pneumonia, and intestinal inflammation. Chronic kidney problems can result. Antibiotic therapy is effective in fighting the bacterial invasion and supportive nursing (replenishment of fluids, administration of diuretics to flush the kidneys and prevent kidney failure, blood transfusions, if necessary) is required.

Vaccinations are not recommended unless there is a disease in the area. The vaccines help to lessen the severity of the disease, but do not prevent it. It also may not be effective for more than six months. Puppies and small dogs can have adverse reactions to the vaccines. If there is a lepto outbreak occurring and veterinarians do recommend vaccination, dogs should be inoculated against all four strains of the disease, unless the particular strain is identified.

Lyme Disease- Is a bacterial disease spread by ticks. Symptoms in dogs include lethargy, joint pain, lack of appetite, lymph node enlargement, and fever. Some dogs have antibodies to the disease, indicating they've been exposed, but they show no symptoms.

Treatment is with antibiotic, Tetracycline. Vaccine is available, but is not widely recommended because the disease is self-limiting and protection is limited to no more than six months, following inoculation. Lyme disease is more serious for humans than for dogs.

Coronavirus- This virus causes diarrhea and vomiting, and can be confused for parvo. The mode of infection is direct contact of an infected animal or its feces. Some dogs have antibodies but no symptoms, others lose their appetite, have smelly diarrhea, and are lethargic and dehydrated. Treatment involves replacing lost fluids and controlling vomiting and diarrhea. Vaccine is available, but not widely recommended.

Abdominal pain can be classified by onset, type, and location: the onset of pain can be either sudden or gradual; the type of pain can be either constant or crampy; the location can be either localized or diffuse. Using a thermometer, check anyone suffering from abdominal pain for a fever.

Question: What are minor causes of abdominal pain?

Indigestion is the most common cause of abdominal distress in both adults and children. Indigestion results from eating too much or eating unsuitable food. It is often accompanied by heartburn, belching, and a sensation of fullness or nausea. In most cases, indigestion ceases gradually and within a few hours. Antacids may help. Indigestion does not trigger a fever.

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestinal tract. It is another common cause of abdominal pain. It can be caused by food poisoning, food allergies, or infections, for example, "stomach flu." The pain is crampy, diffuse, and may come on suddenly. There is nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If the cause is infectious, there may be a fever.

Constipation is a difficulty in emptying the bowels. The pain is often sudden and may be either constant or crampy. Although the pain is usually diffuse, it can be localized to the left side of the abdomen. Constipation does not cause a fever. The pain is relieved by either passing gas and/or stool.

Irritable colon, which is also known as spastic colon or mucous colitis, is a disturbance of large intestine function. The condition is made worse by periods of emotional stress. The pain is crampy. There can be either constipation, diarrhea, or mucous stools, as well as a loss of appetite. A fever is not a symptom.

Menstrual cramps or painful menstrual periods (dysmenorrhea) are experienced by many women. Pain at ovulation or mittelschmerz (middle pain) occurs midway between periods. It can be severe; it is localized to the right or to the left lower abdomen. There is no vomiting, diarrhea, or fever. The pain usually passes in a day or two.

Question: What are the more serious causes of abdominal pain?

Sudden sharp pain that comes in waves (a condition known medically as colic) may be accompanied by vomiting, sweating, and the need to double up. Colic can be caused by several potentially serious disorders, such as intestinal obstruction; stones in the gall bladder system (biliary colic); or stones in the kidney system (renal colic).

Continuous pain, together with slight fever, tenderness of the abdomen when touched, and sometimes vomiting may be caused by inflammation of the appendix (appendicitis), colon (colitis), colon pouches (diverticulitis), or gall bladder (cholecystitis). An inflamed pancreas (pancreatitis) causes continuous pain, vomiting, and tenderness to the touch. An inflamed fallopian tube (salpingitis) causes continuous pain, lower abdominal pain, fever, and tenderness to the touch.

Continuous pain that comes on suddenly, producing tenderness of the abdomen when touched, may be caused by a perforated ulcer, an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy, or a leaking abdominal, aortic aneurysm. An abdominal aneurysm may also cause pain in the back.

Question: What other disorders include abdominal pain as a symptom?

Abdominal pain with backache and frequent, painful passing of urine suggests inflammation of the kidney (pyelonephritis) or of the bladder (cystitis). There may also be a fever. Recurrent abdominal pain may be caused by a peptic ulcer. Abdominal pain is also a symptom of inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis) or an inflammation of the liver (hepatitis).

Question: Are children especially subject to abdominal pain?

No. But a child with infection of the middle ear (otitis media) or inflammation of the tonsils (tonsillitis) may complain of a stomachache. There may be two reasons for this: a child's non-abdominal illness may make him or her feel queasy or nauseated; also, a child's vocabulary may be limited to ache or pain associated in the past with abdominal pain or a stomachache.

The best way to treat pregnancy nausea & diarrhea depends on how severe the symptoms are, how seriously they are interfering with the mother's quality of life, and of course how the safety of the fetus.

Treating Nausea During Pregnancy

Treatment for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) begins with simple diet and lifestyle changes and vitamin supplements and can escalate to antiemetic medications and even hospitalization in serious cases.

A few fairly simple measures are almost universally recommended to minimize NVP:

  • Eat small portions at frequent intervals;

  • Avoid letting the stomach get too empty;

  • Cut rich, fatty, and spicy foods out of the diet;

  • Eat bland foods;

  • Eat dry crackers before getting out of bed in the morning

  • Have a protein-rich snack before retiring at night.

While these measures are all perfectly safe, little or no research shows that they actually provide much help. Women surveyed did report some relief, but limited. Most didn't rank these approaches as very helpful.

Because many pregnant women develop a much more acute sense of smell that can make their nausea worse, they are advised to take note of anything that triggers queasiness or vomiting and avoid those sensory stimuli. Perfumes and food aromas are particular offenders. Other senses may also become hypersensitive, so that loud noises and pressure on the abdomen can also cause distress.

Pregnant women also need extra sleep, and if they don't get it, fatigue can make NVP worse. This could well mean taking time off from work or even a leave of absence.

While diet changes may be only moderately helpful, certain vitamin supplements have a good record of treating and event preventing NVP. One study showed that women who were not taking multivitamin supplements at or close to the time of conception were significantly more likely to experience pregnancy nausea. Another study confirmed that women who started taking daily multivitamins at least a month before becoming pregnant and continued to take them throughout the first trimester had a lower incidence of NVP. It is now advised that all women who may potentially become pregnant take a multivitamin that includes folic acid, which reduces the risk of neural tube defects for the fetus.

In addition, larger doses of vitamin B6 have been found effective for treatment of nausea and vomiting in more than half of pregnant women with severe nausea. The antihistamines diphenhydramine, meclizine and dimenhydrinate may also help relieve NVP by reducing dizziness that can trigger vomiting.

Treating diarrhea during pregnancy

While constipation is a more common complaint, quite a few women suffer from diarrhea while pregnant as well. The most likely cause is the change to a high fiber diet, though diarrhea is also a common symptom of general gastric distress that can also contribute to nausea.

Diarrhea during pregnancy is treated for the most part in the same ways as diarrhea at any other time. Until it passes, avoid caffeine, milk products, greasy, sweet and high fiber foods. All of these can contribute to diarrhea--and some of them can cause NVP as well. Soft, bland foods are recommended, including bananas, rice, plain potatoes, toast, crackers, cooked vegetables, and lean white protein. This is remarkably similar to the diet recommended for preventing or treating NVP.

Antidiarrheal medicines are not generally recommended. Replacing lost fluids to prevent dehydration is usually the only treatment necessary for diarrhea, and for pregnant women this is doubly important if they are also suffering from nausea and vomiting. Dehydration is the greatest health risk associated with NVP, since it can lead to a host of further problems, and in the worst cases, become dangerous.

In part 1 of this Article We looked At some of the types of parasites. Now we will look at some descriptions, as well as some avenues of infestation.

DESCRIPTIONS OF WORMS

"Tape worms: Taenias - fish tapeworm, beef tapeworm, and pork tapeworm. Obtained from eating raw or undercooked, infected meat. Adult worms can reach a length of more than 15 feet. Pork tapeworms can enter the brain and cause seizures. Fish tapeworms can produce over one million eggs per day. It can grow up to 33 feet. This worm is normally half an inch long, and is usually white/grey in color."

White worms come in all sizes, from tiny pinworms to those that look like spaghetti or angel hair pasta.

Red worms look just like earthworms. They exit the colon wrapped in balls. They can reach up to 6 inches long.

Inch worms are thick (pencil size), worms that are black and bumpy, they are about 2 inches long.

Black worms are 10 - 12 inches long and leave the colon wrapped in 'yellow acid water'. They make their nest deep in the impacted colon wall.

Pin worms are tiny parasites that wiggle out of the anus cavity. They look like white rice and are about 3/4 inch long and are thicker than white worms.

Hook worms are curved parasites about six inches long, and having a grayish color. Infestation is said to be as high as 50% worldwide. Hookworms grip the intestinal wall and suck blood.

Thread worms are cream-colored parasites with the thinness of a thread. They frequently exit the body by the hundreds.

Stickpin worms are about one inch long and they have a head like a pea ... small ones are white, adults are black.

'Little fish'...are fish-type parasites that have heads and tails, and they swim out of the colon in schools. On average they are about 1/2 inch long.

'Fuzz balls' are round parasites with fur on them. They are yellow and about 1/4 - 3/4 inch in diameter.

SOME SYMPTOMS

Hookworms can cause itching on the soles of the feet, and in some instances bloody sputum, fever, rash, and loss of appetite.

Threadworms can cause coughing or bronchitis, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and gas, preceded by tiny red abrasions that sometime itch.

Small tapeworms can cause weight and appetite loss, and abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Large tapeworms can cause similar symptoms, usually without the weight loss. Tapeworms are worthy of particular notice in part because of the size to which they can grow within a human host. "The fish tapeworm is a broad, long worm, often growing to lengths of 3-7 feet at maturity and capable of attaining 30 feet. It is the longest tapeworm invading humans with as many as 4,000 segments (proglottids). The main body of the worm is virtually filled with male and female reproductive organs allowing it to produce an incredible number of eggs, often more than 1,000,000 a day. The adult attaches to the wall of the intestine with the aid of two sucking grooves located in its head (scolex)... an appearance similar to that of a spider and are colored brown; often 1 inch long."

"The adult is ivory or grayish-yellow in color and can live in humans for 20 years. Humans are the final host of this worm, but first it must pass through a tiny freshwater crustacean, and then to a fish...The larva that infects people, a 'plerocercoid', is frequently found in the intestines of freshwater and marine fish. It is sometimes found in the flesh of freshwater fish or in fish that are migrating from salt waters to fresh water for breeding. You can be infected by eating raw, lightly cooked,... freshwater or certain migratory species of salmon, perch, pike, pickerel, and turbot. The popularity of eating raw fish dishes, such as Japanese sushi and sashimi, helps to spread this disease....Some people are constantly hungry because the tapeworms are eating most of the food. There are times when the worm gets so large that it will cause a colon blockage. In some people a severe anemia may develop, because of this tapeworm's ability to consume most of its host's vitamin B12. Folate may be reduced as well. With the anemia that results, neurological symptoms can manifest including numbness, loss of vibration sense, and even some eye symptoms."

According to the, Natural Remedies Encyclopedia, the pork tapeworm and the beef tapeworm are more common than the fish tapeworm. "Pork is an extremely dangerous food to eat. The larvae of pork tapeworm frequently burrow through the intestinal wall and travel around the body in the blood. Epilepsy and , if they infect the eyes, blindness may result".

AVENUES OF INFESTATION

There are four pathways by which we can be infected:

1) Via food or water which are sources of the roundworm, amoebae, giardia.

2) Via a vector - mosquito carrier of dog heartworm, filaria, malaria; flea is a carrier of dog tapeworm; common housefly transmits amebic cysts; sand fly carries leishmaniasis.

3) Via sexual contact where partners can transmit trichomonas, giardia, amoebae.

4) Through the nose and skin where pinworm eggs and Toxoplasma gondii can be inhaled from contaminated dust, hookworms, schistosomes, and strongyloides can penetrate exposed skin and bare feet.

"Another parasitic pathway is the airplane. Extensive foreign travel has exposed people to a whole gamut of exotic diseases never before encountered in their homeland." Guess What Came to Dinner by Louise Gittleman, pg. 22.

Dr. James Balch M.D., and Phyllis A. Balch, CNC note : "Worm infestations can range from mild to severe, even life threatening, particularly in children. They result in poor absorption of essential nutrients, and in some cases, loss of blood from the gastrointestinal tract...Malabsorption resulting from parasitic infection makes one susceptible to many diseases because it results in diminished immune function...Parisites are more common than most people suppose and they can be behind many illnesses, including colon disorders...They... are common in people with AIDS chronic fatigue syndrome, candidiasis, and many other disorders".

In part 3 We will look at some of the powerful natural remedies for parasite infestation.

Vitamin B12 injections, also known as cobalamin or cyanocobalamin injections, are administered to patients with deficiency of B12 and symptoms associated with the deficiency, such as fatigue and anemia. B12 injections are given to patients who have low resistance to diseases and remain sick from common illness for long period of time.

Although it is better to consume foods rich in vitamin B12 naturally, such as meat, fish, and dairy products, often the doctor may recommend the supplement of Vitamin B12 in injection form. Injections are beneficial to those individuals who show signs of vitamin B12 deficiency but are unable to absorb it into the body.

Injecting B12 shots are often painful to those sensitive to injections, because they are injected deep into the muscle under the skin.

Common Side Effects

Side effects of vitamin B12 injections vary from person to person depending on the mode of delivery and the health of the person. Some side effects are temporary and may last for just a few days.

Some of the most common side effects are:

1. Muscle cramps:
Some people get cramps or spasms in their muscles after injecting vitamin B12 shots. This will occur usually within 6 hours of receiving the injection.

2. Sleeplessness:
Insomnia, or the inability to sleep, is a commonly-occurring side effect of receiving a vitamin B12 injection.

3. Skin infections and Acne:
Shots of Vitamin B12 may lead to some skin infection, known as Folliculitis, around the hair follicles. Acne may also develop on skin accompanied by skin rashes.

4. Nausea and Headache:
Runny nose and headache are other common side effects after injecting vitamin B12. Some people might experience shortness of breath, unusual coughing, or unusual wheezing.

5. Stomach upset:
Another common side effect of B12 injections is upset stomach followed by diarrhea, difficulty in swallowing food, and feeling of extreme dizziness. A few patients may also feel extreme thirst and tiredness.

6. Rapid heart beat:
Some patients have reported rapid palpitation of the heart and a sensation of heart burn accompanied by chest pain.

Uncommon Side Effects:

There do exist some side effects, though not very common, that may be severe, and possibly life threatening.

1. Clotting of Blood:
Blood clots in the arteries of legs and arms, followed by swelling of the affected areas known as peripheral vascular thrombosis, a serious condition that has the potential to cause loss of limb or even loss of life.

2. Severe Allergic reaction:
Severe allergic reaction is very rare but can be life threatening. Researchers and medical professionals alike question whether the allergy is caused by preservatives in injection or by the vitamin itself. Vitamin B12 injections should be avoided by persons who are allergic to cobalt or cobalamin, as it may lead to allergies.

3. Vision loss in case of "Leber's Disease":
A person who has or has had Leber's Disease should not take vitamin B12 injections, since it can result in optic nerve damage (and possibly blindness). Leber's Disease is hereditary optic neuropathy which will cause slow vision loss, first in one eye and then in the other eye.

4. Pulmonary Edema:
In very rare cases, fluids get accumulated in the lungs of the person taking vitamin B12 injections, a condition known as pulmonary edema. The person may experience pain in the chest and shortness of breath.

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects. There are others. Please do some research to become informed, and always consult with your doctor if you suspect that you are experiencing side effects to any medication.

Parvovirus is an extremely contagious virus that affects dogs and causes severe diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. Many dogs don't recover from this aggressive virus and can succumb to dehydration. Young puppies and elderly dogs are at highest risk of dying from parvovirus and early detection and treatment are crucial if a dog is to survive. Prevention is better than the cure and a regular vaccination program should prevent your dog from contracting the virus.

Puppies should be vaccinated at the age of six weeks. If the mother has been vaccinated she can transfer some protection to her puppies through her milk but they are still susceptible to the disease and care should be taken not to expose them to the virus. Reputable breeders usually do not sell their puppies until they are 8 weeks old and if you're buying a puppy from a breeder you should enquire to see when the puppy was vaccinated in order to determine when the next booster shot is due.

Puppies require booster shots of the parvovirus vaccine every four weeks until they are 16 to 20 weeks old. Until then, the puppy is vulnerable to the virus and extra care must be taken to prevent any exposure to sick dogs or any discharge from a dog that has parvovirus.

Care should be taken to keep the puppy away from other dogs and places where dogs may have eliminated. The virus can be carried on clothes and shoes so be careful not to allow your dog to sniff your clothes if you've been in contact with a sick dog.

Even with proper precautions your dog may contract the disease due to the highly contagious nature of the virus. Recognizing the symptoms and taking your dog to the vet without delay can give your dog the best possible chance of recovering from the disease.

The first noticeable signs are vomiting and diarrhea. Although vomiting and diarrhea are symptoms common with many dog ailments, parvovirus causes stool to have a specific smell. There will also be blood in the stool and the vomiting will become constant as the dog is unable to hold any food or liquids. The dog will appear lethargic and feverish and there will be a marked loss of appetite.

If your dog displays any of these symptoms it is vital that you consult your vet immediately as parvovirus can lead to death rapidly.

Treatment for this condition consists of supportive care and your dog will usually be hospitalized for a week and given intravenous fluids and antibiotics. Once the dog has been treated it can still transmit the virus to other dogs so you should keep the dog at home for several weeks to avoid affecting others.

Parvovirus is a very serious disease and should not be taken lightly. The only want to protect your dog from this deadly virus is to maintain a diligent vaccination schedule and keep up with booster shots as per your veterinarians' recommendation.

Diarrhea is an unpleasant and sometimes embarrassing problem. Unless it is medicine related, it usually doesn't announce it's intention to pounce, it simply starts up. There are many causes, and it can strike anyone at any age. In the very young and the elderly it can become a serious problem, though it usually doesn't.

Food poisoning is one of the most frequent sources for diarrhea. It is sometimes mistaken for a flu bug, and titled the stomach flu. Prevention is always your best bet. Wash all of your fruits and vegetables carefully to remove bacteria and chemicals from it. Always cook meat and poultry to a minimum of 165 degrees and fully cook egg yolks.

There are foods that can trigger this problem as well. You've probably heard the phrase "green apple two step," and eating unripe apples can be a culprit. Eating a large number of grapes and/or unripened ones may also can a bout. If you are fond of these, remember to partake in small amounts to avoid spending an unpleasant amount of time in "the reading room."

There may be some warning for you where medications are involved, though you may have to read the accompanying literature to find out. Laxatives are well known to increase bowel movements and can cause diarrhea like symptoms. What might surprise you is that both antacids and antibiotics could cause the problem. Antacids with magnesium are most likely to do so.

Now for the remedies. Before getting into specifics, there are some general things to do. Make sure you remain well hydrated, as you will be losing a good deal of fluid over the course of the illness. Keep foods on the bland side and don't eat large amounts of food, as it will put added stress on your gastrointestinal tract. There are over the counter remedies for this problem, and they should not interfere with most of the remedies below.

Apples: You can use applesauce, but scraping the inside of a raw apple and eating it is even better. Don't eat unripened apples (see above) and don't eat a large number of them. If the patient is a baby or toddler, a small amount of apple juice could help, but don't go overboard as it could make the problems worse.

Blackberry Leaf Tea: The tannic acids and astringent qualities of blackberry leaves can help reduce the risk of diarrhea and calm the bowels during an episode. It also has antioxidants, adding health benefits to the brew.

Licorice: The root of this plant can coat your stomach and intestines, giving them a chance to calm down. Diabetics should use DGL, as that has the sugars removed. If you have high blood pressure, stick to marshmallow, as the licorice can cause it to go up.

Tea: Like blackberry leaves, tea contains tannins which can help reduce risks and calm the bowels. Black tea is the best, though any tea could help. If you have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, depression or high blood pressure, either avoid tea or use decaf, as the caffeine content could make the other medical conditions worse.

With these tips, it is possible to resolve diarrhea in a fairly short amount of time. If it doesn't resolve quickly, go to the doctor as you may require something stronger to get over the problem. Ask your doctor before starting any new supplement program. Be sure to give information on all medical conditions you have as well as any medications or supplements you use. This will help you avoid dangerous side effects and herb/drug interactions.

Dog obedience training is essential if you want to train your dog to keep his mouth away from what doesn't belong to him. It's even more important if you want to protect him from the things that can hurt him the most. A top dog trainer recognizes the many dangers that face your dog, including toxic plants, and recommends dog training tips and dog training techniques for the safety of your best friend.

You've probably noticed, while training your dog, that he uses his nose and mouth to explore his world. Many things, harmless and otherwise, end up in his mouth.

Chewing behaviors can be detrimental to your home's d矇cor and landscape, but can be even worse for your dog's health. This is especially true when the object of your dog's chewing is a poisonous plant.

These plants, however innocent they may seem, are common dog poisoning culprits:

Ham 'n Eggs, Lantana, or Yellow Sage; whatever you call it, its pretty yellow, orange, red, blue, and white blooms cause ulcerations, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, and sensitivity to sunlight.

Dumbcane, or Dieffenbachia, is not a smart snack idea. It's big, variegated leaves are composed of sharp cells that cause burning sensations, excessive drooling, edema, erythema, and irritation and swelling of oral tissues.

Philodendron is great for household oxygen levels, but this common vine isn't good for your dog's health if consumed. It causes vomiting, swallowing difficulty, excessive drooling, and irritation of oral tissues.

Caladium's heart shaped green, white, and pink variegated leaves, when ingested, can result in vomiting, difficulty with swallowing, excessive drooling, and irritation of oral tissues.

Elephant Ear leaves are bigger than your dog's head, and if he eats one, the symptoms might be bigger than he can handle. Symptoms include vomiting, swallowing difficulties, drooling excessively, and oral irritation.

Ivy's a good creeper, and it proves that by creeping through your dog with symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, excessive salivation, and abdominal cramping.

Rosary Pea, or Prayer Bean, bears red berries that have historically been used to create rosaries. You might want to pray, after calling the vet, if your dog ingests any of these, because he will be subjected to shock, fever, elevated heart rate, bloody stools, bloody vomiting, tremors, and possible death.

Mistletoe is best left hanging high overhead, from doorways at Christmastime. This plant's shiny green leaves and white berries hold the potential to cause suppressed blood pressure, diarrhea, vomiting, erratic behavior, bradycardia, dyspnea, cardiovascular collapse, and gastric disorders.

Castor Bean might be the source of castor oil, a common remedy, but its blue, prickly beans house seeds which contain ricin, which can cause bloody diarrhea, fever, central nervous system decline, loss of coordination, breathing difficulty, trembling and weakness, appetite loss, convulsions, kidney failure, vomiting, excessive thirst, and irritation of oral tissues.

Peace Lily is not peaceful once consumed. Its large white lilies and sizeable green, drooping leaves contain calcium oxalate crystals, which trigger swallowing difficulties, excessive drooling, and oral irritation.

Schefflera, or the Umbrella Tree, bears big leafy bunches of shiny green foliage atop woody stems, and can cause swallowing difficulty, vomiting, excessive drooling, and irritation of the oral cavity if ingested.

Chrysanthemums, or Mums, are well known for their colorful fall blooms. They're also known for their ability to cause loss of coordination, depression, diarrhea, vomiting, and gastric disturbance in dogs.

The list of plants that can harm your dog goes on and on, to include Jack in the Pulpit, Yew, Narcissus, Lily of the Valley, Autumn Crocus, Daffodil, Tulip, Iris, Cyclamen, Delphinium, Hyacinth, Kalanchoe, Oleander, Rhododendron, Amaryllis, Aster, Poinsettia, Azalea, Marijuana, Fox Glove, and Sago Palm.

Be sure that your dog cannot reach your houseplants, and make sure that he's supervised while amid your outdoor plants. You can stop digging and chewing behaviors from ever becoming a problem with dog obedience training techniques like clicker training and crate training. Training a dog with positive and proven dog training tips will keep him safe, even when he's faced with the difficult decision to taste or not to taste.

Copper as copper gluconate can be taken orally, or through an injection. It's most common form which is as supplement, is used to treat or prevent copper deficiency. People who don't have enough copper gluconate intake in their diet may need to take them as a supplement, although this should be determined by a doctor.

Copper gluconate is needed in our body, as it promotes good health and normal growth. It is also needed for enabling our body use iron, which is an important mineral. Aside from this, it is also needed for nerve function, helping our body use sugar and bone growth. There are certain conditions which would increase one's need for it; such as diarrhea, burns, kidney disease, pancreatic diseases, intestinal diseases and stress. Premature babies may also need an increased intake of it, although this is determined by the doctor. While this mineral was used for inducing vomiting, this was determined to be deadly and should therefore be avoided.

Aside from supplements, copper gluconate could also be found in our diet. This could be found in foods such as organ meats like liver, nuts, seafoods, whole- grains and beans. While copper gluconate is fairly safe, it is important to follow the instructions on the label especially if you are taking it without a prescription. There are also several things that need to be considered, such as:

• Pregnancy-- while pregnant women are encouraged to take vitamins and minerals for her and her baby's health, taking too much may be harmful.
• Breastfeeding-- breastfeeding is almost the same as being pregnant, since your baby is still dependent on you for their vitamin intake. If you are breast feeding, you might want to talk to your doctor about the amount of vitamins and minerals you should take.
• Allergies-- talk to your doctor first before taking any kind of supplements if you are allergic to dyes, food or preservatives.
• Taking other medicines or supplements-- while medications should not be taken with other supplements, there are instances when you could take them provided that your doctor has adjusted the dosage of the medication or the supplemental vitamins first. Talk to your doctor if you are also taking trientine, penicillamine or zinc supplements.

Aside from the possible danger of taking copper gluconate with other medications and supplements, you also need to take caution if you have other medical conditions. You really need to talk to your doctor if you have liver disease, biliary disease or Wilson's disease before taking this nutrient. There is nothing to worry about even if you missed a dose of copper gluconate, as it takes time for our body to be dangerously low of it.

If you were instructed by your doctor to take it however, it is best that you take it on time. There is no need to double the dosage though if you missed it. While copper gluconate is safe, there are possible side effects associated with it. These includes blood in urine, bloody or black vomit, diarrhea, fainting or dizziness, heartburn, continuing headache, lower back pain, yellow skin or eyes and loss of appetite.
