It's frightening to see your dog urinating blood and you want some answers fast. Make an appointment with the vet because blood in the urine may require antibiotics or may be something serious enough to require surgery.
Some reasons for a dog urinating blood are:
1. The most common reason for blood in urine is a urinary tract infection. The infection could be in the bladder, or urethra or kidneys.
2. Another cause if your dog is urinating blood could be Kidney disease or Canine Renal Disease. Some symptoms are similar to urinary tract infection such as increased urination, urinating less than usual, thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, no appetite, eating a poisonous substance.
3. In male dogs the prostate gland could be infected and they normally have a swollen penis and testicles. Prostatic disease can be detected from a simple rectal exam to see if the prostate is enlarged and an ultrasound for if cancer is suspect.
4. In a female dog urinating blood a uterine infection could be the cause especially if they have recently given birth, or during a specific part of the heat cycle. This condition could be a bacterial infection of the uterus called Pyometra.
5. Urinary stones sometimes form in the urinary tract which can scrape the urethra causing blood in the urine. Causes can be mineral crystals in the urine, bacteria, diseases, some medications, excess Vitamin C, imbalance in pH of urine.
6. If your dog has eaten something harmful such as poison this also may cause blood in the urine.
7. If your dog urinating blood was hit by a car, was in a dog fight or fell they may look OK but might have internal injuries and must be x rayed to make sure they don't need surgery.
Your best bet anytime your dog is urinating blood: make an appointment to have tests done and have the problem looked at by a professional. If everything checks out ok, or if your dog had a minor infection and is now well, you may want to consider changing the diet and starting a regime of alternative therapies, to keep him on a healthy tract of balance within his urinary system.
