We never know when an emergency or disaster will strike and sadly, often in the rush of things, pets are left behind or simply not given the care they need because their owners just don't know what to do with them or don't have the proper supplies. By spending a little time preparing for possible emergencies and disasters, you little furry friend can be properly cared for until your family can return home after an emergency or disaster.

What can I do to prepare for a possible emergency or disaster? First of all, it's important to know that many Red Cross shelters are unable to accept pets due to space and hygiene constraints. That's why you need to take an extra step ahead of time to have a plan. First of all, call around to hotels out of your immediate area to see which ones accept pets. Keep a list of pet friendly hotels so you know where to go if you need to evacuate your home. Additionally, keep a list of pet boarders outside of your immediate area in case you end up someplace that does not accept pets. Finally, have a portable pet disaster kit ready to go with you. It should be in a container that's easily taken with you such as a backpack or duffle bag and should contain food, medications and medical records, leashes, a carrier, a recent photo, water, food and water dishes and an index card that explains the animal's routine and habits as well as your veterinarian's contact information and a few toys.

What should I do with my pet during an emergency? If you have to evacuate, take your pet with you. Do not go and assume you'll be able to get back soon to care for your pet because depending on the extent of the emergency or disaster, you may not be able to return home soon enough to care for your pet. If you cannot keep your pet with you during the evacuation, find someone who can keep your pet for a short time or take it to a boarder. It's also important to remember that animals can get stressed during this time so be sure to give your pet the extra attention and comfort it needs to feel safe and secure.

What can I do if our pet goes missing? Whether your pet is missing due to an emergency or not, it's important to get out there looking for it as soon as possible. Make up fliers that you can post and hand out. Also, knock on doors of the houses in the areas that you suspect your pet might be. Finally, check all shelters within twenty miles of where you last saw your pet at least every other day because it may take a while for your pet to show up at a shelter.

You probably often see dogs riding in the open beds of pickup trucks or with their heads hanging out the window and we all know how much fun it is to let kittens chase a ball of yarn. The thing is, however, that these are dangerous activities for pets and if we really want them to be a part of our families we need to protect their safety. (NOTE: Cats and kittens can strangle or choke on yarn and string if left to play with them unattended.)

Pet Proof Your Home. If you have pets in your home, you know that they take as much care as a toddler, especially when they are young. They are curious and active. That's why you need to use childproof latches to keep your pets out of cabinets that contain items that could be dangerous if they swallowed it. You should also keep your trash covered and toilet closed and you should always check your dryer before you start it because sometimes animals will crawl into it to stay warm. You'll want to also check your houseplants to make sure you don't have any that are poisonous to your animal.

Hot Weather Safety Tips. When it's hot out, you need to take special precautions to make sure your pets don't overheat. One of the biggest misconceptions is that animals can stay cool on their own. If you take your dog jogging with you, make sure you alter your exercise time to the cooler time of day as most dogs like to please and will continue running even if they are too tired or hot. If your pet is an outside pet, make sure it has a lot of water and shade during the warmer months.

Cold Weather Safety Tips. Animals do grow thicker coats in the winter, but that doesn't meant they don't need shelter when it's cold out. Avoid using space heaters for your pets, however, because they are burn and fire hazards. If your pet stays outside, be careful that they have fresh, unfrozen water. Check their feet often to make sure there isn't an ice build-up on the pads of their feet.

1. Keep a list of pet friendly places and chains so that if you travel with your pet you know where you can and cannot take your pet such as hotels, amusement parks and other entertainment venues and campgrounds.

2. Beware of things that are toxic to animals. Chocolate can be deadly for dogs and pine needles cause diarrhea and vomiting in cats (even if they just drink from the water under the Christmas tree).

3. Check your pet's collar at least once a week until it is full grown. You should be able to fit two to three fingers between the collar and the animal's neck.

4. Cats do better indoors. They live longer and healthier lives than cats who are allowed to go outside. Furthermore, cats who go outside are more likely to get fleas, ticks and worms.

5. Feral cats are a growing problem in the United States. Do your part in solving this problem by spaying and neutering your pets.

Various Size Dogs Reach Senior Years at Various Times

Let's talk about some of the physical and biological changes that happen as dogs age. Dogs age at different rates depending on their physical size. For example, larger dog breeds generally have a shorter lifespan than smaller dogs. So we can say that the larger dog reaches his or her senior years sooner than a small breed dog and will have the associated health issues earlier.

Grey Hair

Regardless of size, aging dogs will start to get grey hair around their muzzle and chin in late adulthood. This is a gentle sign of slow aging and is not too alarming at first. The dog can remain healthy for years regardless of the slight graying in physical appearance.

Decreased Energy

Your dog will slowly lose his or her energy level. You will notice that your dog will have less patience for the hyperactive games he or she used to play before. The dog still may want to play, but will not be able to play for prolonged periods of time. You will know when the dog wants to stop because he or she will lose interest. Also, because of normal age-related changes the muscles and joints weaken, and the dog may be more susceptible to injury. You and your dog can still play these games, just go slower, for shorter time periods and use caution.

Decreased Body Mass

The senior dog's body starts to lose the fatty tissue and collagen layer under the skin. Similar to human aging. This means that some weight loss is normal for an aging dog. However, any weight loss should be checked out by a veterinarian as it is usually not normal. Your aging dog will become increasingly more boney.

Thinning Fur

The dog's coat thins and the shed fur may not appear as "fluffy" as it was prior to aging. Some dogs may be more susceptible to cold weather at this point with the thinning hair and loss of fatty tissue.

Change in Diet

The veterinarian will best advise you on when to start your dog on a senior formula dog food. Probably, by the time most of these changes are happening the dog will have been eating a senior formula for a while already. The senior formulas and less rich and supposed to be easier on the aging dogs digestive tract.

Change in Sleep

Senior dogs sleep longer and harder. You are probably used to the family dog lightly napping throughout the day, but waking up with effervesces at the slightest noise, excitement or sight of food. While the aging dog may sleep harder and need more coaxing to get out of bed. It is okay to let them rest. Make sure he or she has a clean, soft and supportive bed. Some pet stores will sell special orthopedic beds.

Blindness and Deafness

Dogs can lose their hearing and eye sight with age. Older dogs can be blind and deaf, or hard of hearing. Very fast moving objects such as other dogs or young children may frighten the older dog. Any sudden loud noises may startle the aging dog. As an owner it is best to ease distraction and provide a calm environment when possible.

Changes in 'Dog Breath'

A senior dog's breath may change or become more noticeable due to increased tartar build-up from previous years. Unless your dog has been getting regular dental cleaning. Even those commercialized chew toys that claim to clean teeth are not enough. The senior dog may also have swollen gums that may bleed occasionally and add to mouth odor. In some cases a change in dog's breath is a sign of other medical conditions in the body and it is a good idea to visit with your veterinarian.

Changes in Bowel and Bladder

The older dog may have to void more frequently and have more difficulty holding his or her bowels as well when he or she was younger. Provide your dog with more frequent opportunities for elimination. On average every 3-4 hours. For some elderly dogs even more frequent. An increase in accidents in the house even when house trained, is normal and should not be punished because the dog is aging. The dog knows better, he or she just can't control it. It is a sign to increase the opportunity your dog is given to void outside, in the proper area.

Emergency Signs in Your Aging Dog

Get your dog checked out right away if:

Your dog's gait suddenly changes (drunken gait, uncoordinated, staggering)
Sudden blindness, hearing loss, head tilt
Any breathing difficulties
Sudden decrease in eating or drinking
Sudden increase in eating or especially drinking (copious amounts)
Sudden increase in voiding, especially frequent urination
Constantly licking, scratching or biting him or herself.
Diarrhea and vomiting, especially if more than 'a few' continuous bouts

It is important to note that I am not a certified Veterinarian. I am offering this information only as a general guide, that I myself find useful to know, and hopefully you will too. What I can tell you is - any SUDDEN CHANGE in your dog is NOT NORMAL and should be followed up with a visit to the vet. Also, older dogs cannot medically compensate as well or for as long as younger dogs. This means that they cannot tolerate acute illness as well. For example prolonged vomiting and diarrhea, can really quickly dehydrate an older dog and make the older dog a bigger medical emergency, because the older dog's body cannot function as well to keep itself going under the stress of the sudden illness.

Signs of Pain in Dogs

Decreased appetite
Choosing to walk on softer surfaces (Grass instead of cement)
Guarding of limbs (Hold a leg up, not putting pressure on it)
Excessive licking, biting or scratching at skin or limbs
Whining or waling when the affected area is touched
Acting out aggressively (to protect him or herself from getting hurt further)
Reluctant to move or get out of bed

As the dog's owner, you will know when your senior dog has pain by getting to know his or her behavior to age-related changes. You will be able to see how comfortable the dog is by looking in your dog's eyes. You can work effectively with your veterinarian to come up with the best pain control regime for you and your dog.

We have all had the feeling of being angry at some time in our lives. This anger can range anywhere from being mildly irritated to experiencing out of control rage. Whatever the case, it is important to understand that anger is quite normal. In fact it is a very healthy human emotion when handled properly. It can become destructive, though, when it I veers out of control. This can lead to problems in your life and it can affect every area of your life including your personal relationships, your work and even how you view yourself. When your anger has control of you, it can leave you feeling helpless and out of control. When you understand the components of anger, though, you can begin to get a handle on this powerful emotion.

An Explanation of Anger

Like love, happiness and sadness, anger is an emotion. It can be experienced in varying degrees from slightly irritating to uncontrollable fury. When a person experiences anger, just as with other emotions, they experience changes in the body. These changes, biological and physiological in nature, include increased heart rate, increased adrenaline and increased blood pressure. Some people may become flushed, short of breath and even dizzy.

You can become angry at a situation, an event or a person. It is a natural response to threats and a natural response to anger is aggression. This is a primal tendency, but necessary for survival. The problem comes in how some people express their anger. When you are unable to express your anger in a constructive manner, it can create a lot of problems.

Ways that we Express Anger

Typically, the knee jerk reaction to anger is aggression. Many people's first instinct is to lash out at the offending person or situation. This stems from the basic "fight or flight" instincts that we share will all animals. Sometimes, though, lashing out is counterproductive to what you wish to accomplish. There are three basic steps in which anger should be handled: express, suppress and calm. It is the expressing part that gets some people into trouble. While anger should be expressed, some folks take it to another level with severe aggression as opposed to controlled assertion. That is where the situation spirals out of control and the suppression and calming part go right out the window. That is when the destruction begins.

14. Waiting for people or waiting in line really gets on my nerves.

15. I often hate myself after I argue with someone.

16. There are times that I have been so angry that I could not remember what I did or what I said.

17. When someone does something or says something that upsets or angers me I don't typically do or say anything about it at the time. However, I do spend a great deal of time later thinking of smart remarks, cutting responses and things that I should have and could have said.

18. I tend to want to get even with people who frustrate me or hurt me.

19. I have a very hard time forgiving someone who has wronged me.

20. There are times when I have been angry enough to kill.

21. I have a tendency to have very intense arguments with people who are the closest to me.

22. There are times that I get or have gotten so angry that I become physically violent by breaking things or hitting people.

23. I get depressed when things don't go the way that I want them to.

24. When I am feeling hurt, frustrated or angry I use food, alcohol or drugs to comfort myself.

25. I am aware that I am a very angry person and that I need help in learning how to manage my anger because my temper has already caused problems with my relationships or work.

How to Manage your Anger

If counting to ten, deep breathing, meditation and other relaxing techniques aren't working for you then an anger management class could help you. You can find a good anger class online and work through your anger issues in the comfort of your own home. If anger is taking its toll on your life and creating problems for you at home, work or school, then it is time to take action. Anger does not have to rule you, you can get control and be happy.

There are many causes to diarrhea: virus, bacteria, germs, bad food, antibiotics, excessive intake of laxatives and so on. There are plenty of remedies to diarrhea, and some are better than others. But one that is 100% natural, easy to make, cheap and effective is: carrot soup.

It supplies water to combat dehydration while replenishing your body with sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sulfur, and magnesium. It also supplies pectin, and coats the intestine to reduce inflammation. Moreover, it will prevent vomiting and any growth of harmful germs inside the intestine.

This carrot soup recipe is not the traditional soup recipe your grandmother used to cook. In fact, you will only need the juice from the carrots, as you do not want to give anything solid to someone who has a diarrhea.

What you need:

A large cooking pot
A strainer
2 pounds of carrots, peeled and sliced
1 cup water
1 teaspoon salt

First, peel the carrots and slice them. Then heat the carrot in 1 cup of water in the cooking pot over medium heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 25-30 minutes, until the carrot is tender. Mash the carrot thoroughly and add 1 1/2 cup of boiling water. Bring to a boil again, then simmer for an additional 15 minutes. Place the strainer over a large bowl to retrieve the carrot juice, then pour the mixture into it. Press the mashed carrot with a fork to retrieve as much carrot juice as you can.

Give 3/4 cup of carrot soup to the patient every 20-30 minutes.

If you've decided on formula as the choice for feeding your baby, you might be a bit confused about all the choices. There are lots of options to help you find the type that will best suit your baby's needs and your lifestyle.

When you are in the hospital, if your baby is getting formula, it will likely be pre-mixed in one serving disposable bottles, and will be a name brand, milk based formula. This is likely to be what your pediatrician recommends and will work well for most babies. You may be able to use this for the whole first year, with no issues.

If your baby has trouble with this formula, he may have a milk allergy, and may need soy, or other special type of formula. If your baby is having trouble tolerating his formula, he may cry significantly after eating, indicating that he has a stomach ache or he may throw up or have diarrhea. If you notice what you think might be intolerance to the formula, contact your pediatrician right away. You might have to experiment with a few before you find the right one, but don't lose hope. There is a formula out there that will work well for your baby.

Your next consideration is whether you want pre-mixed, liquid concentrate or powdered formula. Pre-mixed means you just pour and serve. Liquid concentrates need to have water added, as does powdered. Pre-mixed is the most expensive, powdered is the least. But, of course, pre-mixed is also the most convenient. Pre-mixed and liquid concentrates also spoil more quickly. Powdered formulas do have a shelf life, but are generally good for about two weeks. Your decision will generally be decided by your budget and lifestyle, as babies tolerate all three types equally well. You might want to mix and match, using powdered formula when you're at home, and pre-mixed when you travel. Follow the directions on your formula package carefully.

When you're bottle feeding, you must also be diligent about sterilizing your bottles. Keeping the feeding equipment sterile is critical to protecting your baby's health, especially in the early days. If you want to minimize the equipment that needs to be sterile, try using the bottles that hold disposable milk bags. These are good at keeping air out of the baby's tummy, and require that only the nipple be sterilized. The down side is that you have to buy the sterile disposable bags, and each bag can be used only once. You might want to spend some time shopping around to decide what kind of bottle your want to try. Whatever type you choose, just be sure to read the sterilization instructions, and follow them closely.

At first, bottle feeding may seem like a lot of work, but give it some time. Once you get the hang of sterilizing bottles and preparing formula, it will be a breeze.

Constipation in toddlers should be handled carefully because the more the toddler tries to hold back the stools the worse it would become. It is quite common to see the toddlers suffer from constipation. Constipation is after all a painful process due to the passing of dry and hard stools.

Although you can cite several causes for constipation, one of the most important causes for constipation in toddlers is the lack of fibrous content in the food they consume. Milk products and peanut butter are the two foods that lack fiber and are consumed by the toddler often. Too much of intake of cow's milk can also cause constipation. If the toddler consumes more solid foods then the stools are likely to get dry and hard resulting in constipation. Inadequate consumption of water also might lead to constipation in toddlers.

You might wonder as to what should be done to treat the problem of constipation in toddlers. The best way to keep it at bay is to keep an eye on the diet that the toddler takes. Ensure that the toddler takes liquid diet as well in addition to the other types of food. It is advisable to give the toddler fiber-rich food as well. Intake of fruits and vegetables go a long way in easing the bowel movements. You ultimate goal should be that the toddler should have comfortable bowel movements.

Milk cannot be stopped altogether but too much of consumption of milk will cause constipation in toddlers. On the other hand it would be highly advisable for the toddler to consume foods like spinach, beans, sweet potatoes, turnip greens, peaches and raw tomatoes more as these foods are said to be rich in fiber. Fruit juices and water should be given to the toddler at regular intervals. Pop corn and vegetable soup are also considered very good choices to help the toddler ease bowel movements. If the eating habits of the toddler are kept in check then constipation in toddlers can be controlled successfully.

The Need for Iron Infusions

The human metabolism needs iron to function properly. Each blood cell has small iron particles in it. These particles bind to oxygen molecules in the body and brings the oxygen to the tissues. If there is not enough iron in your blood, your muscles, organs, and other tissues will not have proper oxygen levels, which leads to feelings of exhaustion.

There are different reasons for low iron levels. Some people have digestive systems that are unable to pull iron from ingested food. Others have digestive systems that cannot absorb iron. Some people may lose a lot of blood through dialysis, or they just might have low iron levels naturally. If you have a rapid production of red blood cells, it also could result in anemia.

In the instances above, there is not much to do to restore iron levels. If the body is unable to process or absorb iron, eating properly will not help. People dealing with this condition may need occasional intraveous iron infusions. These infusions will give someone proper iron levels, which will supply the body with the proper amounts of oxygen.

Iron Infusion Side Effects

After someone undergoes an iron infusion, there are a few side effects that are commonly described. These are typically minor ones and are no indication that dosage should be changed. Any side effects you experience should be reported to your physician.

Hypotension
One of the most common side effects of iron infusion is hypotension, or low blood pressure. Low blood pressure could cause you to feel dizzy or lightheaded. Fainting is a possibility.

Muscle Cramping
As your body gets used to the extra oxygen flooding muscles and organs, you might feel cramping. Do not be alarmed by this because it will take time for your body to adjust. If you find it difficult to deal with the cramping, let your physician know.

Irregular Bowels
People have reported both constipation and diarrhea after an infusion. Both conditions can be bothersome, but your doctor should be able to control either one with medication.

Nausea
After an iron infusion, appetite changes and an upset stomach are common. Your doctor might be able to suggest a medication to help you.

Headache
Headaches range in pain level from mild to severe. Because a headache may be unrelated to your iron infusion, be sure to tell your doctor if you experience them.

Most of the iron infusion side effects people experience are mild and temporary, and most people prefer them to the exhaustion that comes with iron deficiency. Before taking any medication to eliminate side effects, speak with your doctor. Many of them will go away on their own.
