Taking herbs for acid reflux may be a beneficial way to avoid heartburn so you don't ever have to worry about confusing heartburn symptoms with a heart attack. Herbs can help you stop heartburn before it starts which will help you limit the number of antacids or other medications you may take for heartburn relief.

There are various herbs used as health remedies, but only some are truly effective at preventing and relieving acid reflux. The following are 5 effective herbs for acid reflux.

1 - Black Pepper - This is an aromatic herb that enhances taste, improves gastric circulation, and stimulates digestion. Black pepper can be added to recipes or can be an additional feature to prepared meals. For best results, use a small (approximately a tsp.) amount of fresh black pepper whole and grind it over food.

2 - Indian long pepper - Indian long pepper is a powerful stimulant for digestion, and is one of the most recommended for enhancing digestion, assimilation, and metabolism for foods ingested. In addition, Indian long peppers are fantastic herbs for acid reflux disease, as studies have found it can provide considerable protection against the development of gastric ulcers.

Indian long pepper should be taken in small amounts (approximately a tsp.), and can be purchased dry and used in recipes, or added to meals for flavor. Simply crush the pepper to add it to food. Keep in mind that if you use too much, the flavor can become too intense, and you may find it too hot to eat.

3 - Ginger - Ginger has been used for thousands of years to aid in digestion and treat stomach distress such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Ginger is one of the most highly effective herbs for acid reflux, and it is likely the most pure. The effectiveness of ginger is due to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and analgesic properties.

Fresh ginger root can be added to recipes or added as an extra garnish to a finished meal. Ginger can also be taken in powder form and in tea.Ginger is considered to be one of the safest herbal remedies to take, and you can ingest moderate amounts of it daily (I.E. tsp. of powder ginger, or an inch of a ginger root). However, be advised that if taken excessively, it may lead to mild heartburn.

4 - Liquorice - Liquorice is a powerful herb and anti-inflammatory that studies have found are showing much promise as inhibiting the development of ulcers, wounds on the mucous membran, and gastritis. Liquorice also acts like an antacid.

Liquorice was also found to improve the secretion status of Brunner's gland, which is located throughout the duodenum system. Brunner's gland works to protect against the development of duodenal ulcers. Liquorice is available in powder form and can be taken in tea. A cup of tea or 3 tsp. of powder liquorice daily is considered safe to take. High doses of liquorice can lead to symptoms such as headache, water retention and high blood pressure.

5 - Indian gooseberry - Indian gooseberry is a fruit that has been used to treat peptic ulcers and ingestion that is non-ulcer related. Studies have found Indian gooseberry to have considerable antioxidant effects, and it significantly reduced gastric mucosal injury and acid secretion. Indian gooseberry is made up of cell-protective properties as well as antiulcer, and antisecretory properties.
You can eat an Indian gooseberry raw with a little salt, or you can take it in powder form and in the form of tea. This herb is not associated with side effects, but should still be ingested in moderation, as it can act as a laxative if eaten in copious amounts.

When considering herbs for acid reflux, keep in mind that you shouldn't take herbs as a form of medicinal treatment without first consulting your doctor about your plans. This is because some herbs may interact with other herbs, with medications you may currently be taking, or other health conditions you may have.

While I was growing up we used to feed our dogs table food, or "table scraps", as it was referred to back then. We never had any problems with our dogs getting sick from eating our leftovers, but now it is considered to be a dangerous practice among animal lovers.

Most human food that is given to pets is too fatty for their digestive system. Dogs can become quite ill if given a diet rich in meat, potatoes, and other table food. They may get severe stomach aches, vomiting and diarrhea from these foods. This could also lead to inflammation of the pancreas, which is fatal. There is also a tendency for dogs to overeat if given human food. This might be because they prefer the taste of our food to theirs or else it is due to the fact that dogs will usually eat as much food as you give them.

Other table food that we may consider to be a treat could be potentially fatal. Foods such as chocolate, which dogs love, or garlic, can be toxic if your dog eats even a small amount. Bones from chicken and turkey can also splinter and end up puncturing your dog's intestines. At the very least these foods can make your dog sick with diarrhea or vomiting.

It is best to feed your dog a dry food that is recommended by your veterinarian. This will vary depending on the breed, age, and health of your dog. Canned food should be given in moderation. It is very rich and may cause diarrhea. Another alternative is preparing food for your animals that is made with lamb, turkey, or chicken combined with vegetables and whole grains. There are many resources for information on preparing these homemade meals. Dogs have different taste buds than humans so you may have to experiment with ingredients to find food that is both healthy and tasty for your pet.

The most important factor is making sure that your animal is getting the proper nutrition that will ensure a long, healthy life. With the recent incidences of pet food contamination you will want to take extra time in choosing safe foods for your pets.

We parrot lovers will do just about anything to include our parrots in our lives. After all, they are such smart, loving characters, how can we help ourselves? We love to spoil them silly because we can see that they just love it.

This article outline just a few parrot care dangers that range from choosing parrot cages properly to what people foods you may share with your feathered loved ones.

Parrot Cage Considerations:

When considering adopting a beautiful parrot, you should be aware that their parrot cages can greatly contribute to their well-being or detract from it in a most serious way. Parrots have been known to become irritable or depressed, if they are in a cramped cage. Take as much time to choose your parrot cages as you take to choose your feathered friend. They certainly deserve it. Some of factors you should consider in choosing parrot cages are:

Cage Size:

If your parrot is young, be sure they can grow into the cage you choose. Ample cage size ensures a happy healthy environment for your parrot. Be sure the cage is wider than it is tall as birds are more likely fly side to side in the cage.

Bar Spacing on The Cage:

It may seem obvious, but your parrot should not be able to poke his/her head through the bars on the cage you select. Often times what goes through does not come back through so easily. It would be horribly tragic to have your parrot get stuck in the bars when you are not around.

Cage construction:

Ensure the cage is constructed of anti-corrosive materials such as stainless steel. Also, ensure that no welded spots, screws or wires may be worked loose over time. An unfortunate discovery of a loose screw, could be fatal to your parrot if he/she should swallow it.

Sharing People Food Deserves special consideration as well.

When it comes to sharing 'people food' with our parrots, we need to beware of some very poisonous foods and toxic fumes that can be deadly to parrots. The following foods have been known to cause serious health issues, if not fatal reactions with parrots:

Avocado: Deadly to parrots and other varieties of birds. The skin and the pit are know to cause cardiac distress and eventually heart failure.

Chocolate: Chocolate strikes the parrots' digestive system and will likely causing vomiting and diarrhea. It affects the central nervous system and eventually causes seizures severe enough to cause death.
Fruit Seeds: Seeds from cherries, peaches, apricots and pears contain small amounts of cyanide (a deadly poison to humans and birds). The flesh of these fruits is just fine to share with your parrot, but please be sure to wash the skins of these fruits as they are commonly subjected to pesticides, which may also harm your parrot.

Onions: In large amounts this veggie may cause vomiting, diarrhea and other digestive issues.
Alcohol: A definite 'no-no'. Be careful that your parrot does not get into unattended drinks if you are having a gathering. Alcohol can be fatal to parrots and other bird varieties, as it depresses the organ system quite easily.

Mushrooms: These fungi have been known to cause digestive upset in our companion birds. Sadly, some varieties of mushroom caps and mushroom stems can cause liver failure.

A very common kitchen element, Teflon, is very deadly to your pet birds. Get rid of your Teflon and any plastic coated cookware that you have in your home. Overheated Teflon omits an odorless gas that you cannot see or smell; your bird can die within minutes upon inhalation of these deadly fumes. If you have a pet parrot, you should not have any Teflon in your home.

Think of your pet bird or pet parrot as a very tiny baby. They have tiny lungs which are very susceptible to smoke from kitchen cooking smoke and many other fumes we inhale with no noticeable affects upon our health.

The facts noted above are meant as a guideline in caring for your parrot in the very best possible way. Be sure to treat your pet parrots like the fragile beings they are. It's so easy to injure them, I thought it was important to share this information with whomever might be searching for it. And, above and beyond all, be sure to spend some quality leisure time together with your parrots. They need to have fun.

Does your dog get sick from whipworms? Andrea the barber has a big dog. In summertime, she and her husband vacationed with their dog at their trailer in Wisconsin for an extended weekend. After a couple of days, their big dog started having diarrhea and vomiting. The dog got very sick. They loved their dog and wanted it well. So they brought him to the emergency room at an animal hospital for treatment and observation. Their dog was admitted for several days stay at the hospital. It was expensive -- about $1,800. And what was wrong with the dog? It contracted whipworms. And what's worse, their vet had not recommended a simple remedy of the right kind of heartworm medicine.

When your pet gets a case of whipworms, look out. These creatures are a threat to dog health and cat health. Worm in dogs and worms in cats often lead to either immediate health problems or chronic health problems. The only real preventative measure against this parasitic worm and its dangerous effect on your best friend's life is the annual check up.

What pets are most at risk?

Dogs and cats who spend a great deal of time outside in enclosed areas are the most at risk for attracting these nasty little worms. In particular, dogs are unbelievable at re-infesting themselves. If your dog has been treated for any type of parasitic worm, but still roams freely in the area that he uses for his toileting, chances are excellent that he will pick up another case of whipworms.

Cats and dogs and cats that spend a least part of their time outdoors are tested for whipworms during their annual check-up. Testing for whipworms is usually part of this process. Blood tests can determine whipworms, as well as other types of worms during the once a year check under the hood routine. Stool tests can also detect any number of parasitic worms that may have died in the intestinal tract or were excreted prior to being able to latch onto the intestinal wall.

What are the symptoms of whipworms? When pets get any type of parasitic worm, they often experience upset stomachs, vomiting, and diarrhea. Diarrhea in dogs can be associated with a wide variety of possibilities, and dog owners often overlook the potential for serious dog health problems. Cats, as well experience vomiting and diarrhea, which is often mistaken for hairballs. Diarrhea in cats generally does not represent a hairball problem, but a more serious cat health complication.

What is the best way for treating whipworms? When paying a visit to the veterinarian, he or she will recommend several worms treatment options that typically include the following ingredients: fenbendazole, milbemycin oxime and febantel. These types of treatments are quite effective in treating a whipworm infestation without producing many side effects. A veterinarian will generally suggest to space out treatments every two to three months throughout the year to decrease the risk of reinfection since whipworm eggs may remain active for five years

Preventing whipworms is something every pet owner can do. Make sure to read this article and gain insights on what remedies and preventive medicine are most effective.

Complaints of food poisoning from holidaymakers returning from Tunisia have increased in the past 18 months and personal injury solicitors are currently handling hundreds of cases for compensation against tour operators.

Ten things you should know about holiday food poisoning compensation claims after food poisoning in Tunisia include:

1. If you become ill after eating contaminated food in Tunisia, you can claim compensation in the UK for loss of enjoyment of your holiday, medical expenses and pain and discomfort, providing the negligence of the tour operator caused your illness.
2. It will not cost you a penny to claim holiday illness compensation if you use a no win, no fee solicitor and you should keep 100% of the compensation. A personal injury/holiday illness solicitor should also assess your claim free of charge.
3. Common symptoms of holiday illness in Tunisia include vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and fever.
4. You should always get checked out by a doctor at your resort in Tunisia and in the UK when you return home to confirm you are not still suffering from food poisoning.
5. Salmonella and E.coli can cause serious illness and even death if they are not treated correctly at the outset and you must take plenty of fluids to help avoid dehydration after prolonged bouts of sickness and diarrhoea. Anyone can become ill with food poisoning but those most likely to suffer serious illness include young children, pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems and older people.
6. Tour operators may offer you money off vouchers or small amounts of compensation for food poisoning in Tunisia, but you should not accept it until you have spoken to a no win, no fee personal injury solicitor in the UK, as you could be entitled to claim much more.
7. If you become ill after eating the food at a package tour hotel or an all inclusive hotel in Tunisia, you should hand in a written complaint to the holiday representative at the hotel making a note of his/her name. Keep a copy of the complaint form, to show to a personal injury solicitor in the UK if you decide to bring a compensation claim against the tour operator.
8. If other people are ill at the hotel, with similar symptoms as yours, make a note of their names and contact details as you may be able to bring a joint claim against the tour operator when you return home.
9. Try to avoid eating any foods which may have been reheated day after day and never eat 織hot織 food which is served lukewarm or meat which is not cooked thoroughly.
10. Drink bottled water (only if the seal is intact) and avoid ice in drinks.

Once you return to the UK contact a no win, no fee personal injury solicitor as soon as possible. Although legally you have three years in which to make a claim, contact a solicitor as soon as possible when you return home, whilst the details of your illness are still fresh in your mind. Holiday illness in Tunisia can ruin your dream trip abroad and you can claim compensation for mild or severe symptoms of food poisoning, providing the tour operator was to blame for your illness. Gather as much evidence as possible from your holiday hotel, which will help with a claim for compensation against the tour operator.

A group of researchers in the Cardiology Unit, Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institute in Sweden, set out to discover how diabetics who had suffered a heart attack responded to various kinds of treatments. The results of their work were published in the February 2011 publication of the journal Diabetologia.

One thousand one hundred and forty-five patients with Type 2 diabetes who had suffered a heart attack were included in the study. They were divided into three groups who:

  • received either insulin

  • insulin while in hospital and conventional treatment afterward, and

  • only conventional treatment for 2.1 years

The volunteers were followed for an average of 4.1 years. The number of fatal heart attacks was about the same in all groups. The number of non-fatal heart attacks was greatest in the insulin-treated groups. The group with conventional treatment only, had a lower risk of death from cancer than either of the other two groups. Type 2 diabetics taking metformin had a lower risk of death and lower risk of cancer than other patients.

Metformin tablets (Glucophage, Glucophage XR, Fortamet), is an oral blood sugar lowering medication. It is usually used as first-line therapy for Type 2 diabetes and can also be used to prevent Type 2 diabetes in people at high risk. One study in Canada showed that metformin and Avandia together lowered the risk of diabetes in prediabetic volunteers.

This oral blood sugar lowering medication is taken once, twice, or three times a day as prescribed. It is usually started as 500mg twice per day or 850mg once a day. The dose can be gradually increased depending upon how blood sugars react.

Metformin has more than one mechanism of action:

  • it lowers intestinal absorption of sugar

  • increases insulin release from the pancreas

  • lowers sugar production in the liver, and

  • helps the muscle and fat cells respond to insulin. (The function of insulin is to help the cells to take in sugar).

Possible Side Effects: Metformin is basically safe but, like all medications, can have side effects. The most serious of them is lactic acidosis. The signs and symptoms of lactic acidosis are:

  • fatigue

  • dizziness

  • sleepiness

  • chills

  • cool or blue skin

  • muscle pain

  • fast or difficult breathing

  • slow or irregular heartbeats

  • abdominal pain

  • nausea

  • vomiting or diarrhea.

The drug rarely causes hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, but this is a possibility as well, and can also occur when metformin is prescribed with other anti-diabetic drugs. Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar include sweating, shaking, heartbeat, unusual hunger, blurred vision, dizziness and tingling in the hands or feet.

Since metformin is excreted in the urine, it must be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Elderly patients should have kidney function tests before starting this medication. Type 2 diabetics taking metformin are advised to stop the medication a few days before having xray procedures with contrast.

If your dog is suffering from diarrhea, it is not right to just let the condition take its toll. While diarrhea may heal without you doing anything about it, that path is a very dangerous road to take. Pet owners should always be aware of what their pets are going through for their own benefit. Certain diseases prove to have irreversible effects. And you don't want your pet to die from a health condition if you can help it.

The case is very true with dog diarrhea. Dog diarrhea can cause dehydration or loss of fluids. And this condition is not only fatal to dogs but to humans as well. Therefore, dogs with diarrhea should be given first aid so as not to worsen the situation.

Diarrhea in dogs occurs because of many reasons. However, the most common one is when your dog gets in contact with spoiled food, the trash, and insecticides around the house. You must make sure that your pets never get hold of these items as the end result is most likely to be diarrhea.

They symptom of diarrhea in dogs is usually watery stool. If you see that there are rarely solids in the wastes of your dog, there are high chances that it is suffering from diarrhea. This can be coupled with other symptoms such as lost appetite for food and lethargy.

If your dog has diarrhea, it most likely has parasites in its stomach. Therefore, your first job is to flush it out. You can do this by giving your dog water during the first 24 hours you noticed the problem. Give your dog nothing but water for a day. This will help in the removal of all the bacteria, fungi, parasites, or even viruses that may be present in its stomach. Furthermore, water may counter the dehydration caused by the disease. It could also help alleviate your dog's condition.

You have to observe whether there is blood in your dog's stool. The presence of blood is an indication that your dog is suffering from a severe case of dog diarrhea. You should take your dog to the veterinarian for further check ups. The vet may also require a stool sample from your pet.

First aid for dog diarrhea would also require you to feed your dog with a bland diet. This means boiled rice and skinless chicken for the time being. The foods you should give your dog must be totally free from oil, preservatives, and salt. It should be something that your pet can easily digest because the stomach of your dog is still recovering from irritants.

Certain antibiotics may also be required by your pet. Your veterinarian should be able to help you on this. If your dog had suffered from diarrhea before and you have left over medicine, it should suffice. However, you should continue observing your pet because the medicine you give it may or may not be effective for this particular case. Keep in touch with your veterinarian for further help.

My first child was colicky, miserable. I became a vegan while breastfeeding trying to curb the chronic condition. As for formula, we tried them all until settling on Alimentum, which worked until we introduced food. Then things took a terrible two year turn. Everything we fed the child caused diarrhea. My doctors, overwhelmed with new mom syndrome, patted me head and sent me along not so concerned. In fairness to them, they couldn't have known how big a deal it was until we had what I refer to as a month from hell. The child was going over ten times a day and couldn't seem to process anything and was losing weight. The doctors perked up and realized something wasn't right. From there it was visits to the gastroenterologist that finally yielded the fact that our first born was allergic to: wheat, nuts, soy, milk protein, egg whites, dog dander, and a few insects. So keep these things in mind if you're dealing with this type of child:

  • Obviously the most terrifying sign of a food allergy is anaphylactic shock. It's also the rarest form but be informed of some of it's signs: itchy, hives, difficulty breathing, vomit, coughing. Call for help immediately - this is not the time to home remedy. I know, my first child went into it after getting peanuts. It's terrifying.

  • Many food allergies are outgrown over time. These days we only have to worry about very extreme nut allergies with our first born. Not great, I know but it could be worse. It could be very extreme allergies of that entire list.

  • Colic isn't some magic aliment that cannot be explained. I get so angry when I read it has nothing to do with the digestive process or stomach area. My child would let out adult style gas or poop at the end of every colic session. Every one I've ever known with a colicky baby has said as much. Babies have never eaten any of the things we're giving them. No matter how mild, it's a shock to their bodies. And just like adults, some of them handle it better than others. And those with allergies can't handle it at all. More often than not, it most certainly is digestive.

  • Eczema is sign number one. Now eczema can be triggered by many things so confer with your doctor but with both of my kids it started with their formula intolerance. Don't even start foods until you've found a formula they can tolerate. My second is on soy, but my first was an Alimentum baby. Both started on milk formula. As hard as it is to waste expensive formula, if the child isn't tolerating it, check with your pediatrician and determine a new formula course and start it immediately.

  • Introduce foods slowly. I know it's exciting and fun to bring new tastes and smells into their worlds, but you have all the time in the world to do this. Take more than a week between foods. Even with my second child, when I tried to introduce peas I got the tell tale signs of diarrhea. Then it happened again when I tried garlic. So I've shelved both of those for now and will try again in 6 months. Had I been moving faster than a week I might have blurred together the introductions and not been sure what caused the change in him.

  • Diarrhea. Listen to it. It's real and it's their bodies trying to tell you something. Sometimes it might just be a cold or illness. But run through the list. If it's chronic make that call to your doctor.

  • There are no dumb questions. Call the doctor if you're unsure or need some answers. And be the squeaky wheel. By continuing to raise the point with my first child we finally did get answers and were able to form a course for a better eating life for the child.

  • Once you get to table foods, go easy on hard to digest foods like fried food, spicy foods, red meats even some veggies like broccoli. White flakey fish (like tilapia) are a great protein and much blander than most meats.

And remember they may just outgrow these allergies. But if not, arm yourself with information.

Blue green algae is a type of bacteria that can produce their own food through photosynthesis, just like plants do. This is why they are green in color. This alga is typically known as cyanobacteria and lives in lakes, ponds, marine water, or even brackish water. Blue green algae in lakes can form what are known as Blooms. This phenomenon looks like green scum, foam, or a mat across the top of the water.

Not only is this floating muck often unsightly, but it also tends to smell as the cyanobacteria die. Some forms of this algae are more toxic than others and most cause irritation when they come into contact with skin. Despite having negative effects, these algae might be responsible for the air on Earth today. Three billion year old fossils have been found and the algae are thought to have been the main producers of oxygen long ago.

A lot of the algae attach themselves to rocks or submerged plants in the lake. The more nutrient rich a freshwater lake is, the more prevalent algal blooms are. Other than the amount of nutrients, additional factors that determine how much of this algae is present in a lake are; pH, light, and temperature. Most blooms are seen during the summer or early autumn, since this time period is perfect weather for the spread of this green algae.

Algae blooms are often thought of to be a nuisance when they occur in a lake that is used for recreational enjoyment. Swimming areas are closed off when the blooms are present and boating isn't as desired in these areas either. An abundance of this type of algae can definitely put a damper on the tourist industry for some areas.

Some benefits of blue green algae include being used as a fertilizer, food source, and in medical products. This type of algae is added to rice paddies and soil for fertilization. The algae add organic matter and nitrogen to the soil, which increases the productivity of land and crops can be grown in otherwise barren soils. Erosion of the land is also slowed down by the addition of blue green algae taken off of lakes, since it binds to the soil particles.

Spirulina is a type of this algae that can be grown in fresh water and consumed by humans. It is high in protein and amino acids. All the amino acids a human being needs are contained in Spirulina and the protein content is around 60%.

Poisonous varieties of blue green algae also occur in lakes. These are the type responsible for the death of cows and other farm animals. Some dogs have even been poisoned by blue green algae in lakes. They are often drinking out of the same lakes as many other wild animals and aren't immune to the effects of the algae.

Humans who have come into contact with the poisonous variety of blue green algae get a variety of unpleasant symptoms; red or sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, itching eyes, red skin around the eyes, nausea, and headache. Be very aware of the water quality of any lake you enter, in order to avoid this unpleasantness.

Creatine was discovered in 1832 and named after the Greek word Kreas, meaning flesh.

Creatine is a naturally occurring organic acid in the body. It supplies energy to muscle cells for anaerobic activity, or short bursts of energy. Such as weight lifting and sprinting. It is also used to treat muscular, neuromuscular and neuro-degenerative diseases.

Creatine fills the muscle cells with water. This gives the body energy to perform work like weight lifting harder and longer. With the added strength it enables you to max out your muscles more effectively and gain more muscle mass, as a result.

Benefits of Creatine:

-Increased energy

-Increased strength

-Aids muscular growth

-Improves brain function

-Reduces recovery time

-Reduces fatigue

Side Effects

When used properly and in cycles, creatine is relatively safe. However certain side effects have been documented:

-Increased risk of high blood pressure (hypertension) due to increased water retention

-Dehydration

-Muscle cramps

-Diarrhea

-Heat intolerance

-Muscle strains

-It is said to be a myth but many people experience bloating and feeling "watery" when they are using creatine.

Creatine is supplied by half our own bodies and half by fish and meat. Vegetarians have lower levels of creatine but when they take creatine as a supplement, their levels are actually higher than in meat eaters. The main reason meat eaters just don't eat more meat is because a lot of the creatine is actually destroyed in the cooking process. Meat is also high is saturated fat and cholesterol. Adding more to the diet would work against their fitness goals.

Creatine should be used in 3 cycles called loading, maintenance and rest.

Week 1-Loading: During the loading phase you want to boost the concentration of creatine in your muscles by taking approximately 20g/day in 4-5 servings.

Week 2-4-Maintenance: During the maintenance cycle you will want to keep the creatine in your muscles by taking approximately 5-10g/day in 2-3 servings.

Week 5-8-Rest: No creatine

Creatine works best with simple carbs, such as fruit juice. So when you take your creatine, mix the powder with grape juice or a similar type of juice that rates high in the glycemic index (GI) chart.

Before taking any supplement talk to your doctor and read labels very carefully. Instructions and dosage can differ from brand to brand. Be careful about anything new that you put in to your body. Always do your research by reading health articles from trusted sources and by asking people who have successfully cycled creatine themselves.

Get Ripped!
