Everyday choices affect the health of our families and our environment. Watkins Natural Lemon Liquid Laundry Detergent is ultra concentrated and requires only 1 ounce per load. This convenient 32 ounce bottle contains 74% less water than commercial 100 ounce detergents; and the 32 ounce packaging requires less than half the plastic. Minimize waste and your impact on the environment with Watkins Natural Lemon Liquid Laundry Detergent. Traditional laundry detergents are often petroleum-based. These detergents deplete a nonrenewable resource and create pollution when manufactured. Natural laundry detergents reduce the number of chemicals and toxins that come into direct contact with your family's skin as well as reduce energy costs and protect water supplies. This natural formula also contains a soy-based fabric softener to leave clothes feeling soft and clean. Ideal for both front loaders and high efficiency washers.

Watkins Premium Natural Cleaning Products feature plant-based formulas that are:
o Ammonia Free
o Animal Ingredient Free
o Benzene Free (Benzene exposure has serious health effects. The short term breathing of high levels of benzene can result in death, while low levels can cause drowsiness, dizziness, rapid heart rate, headaches, tremors, confusion, and unconsciousness.)
o Biodegradable
o Boron Free
o Butyl/Ethyl Cellosolve Free (Some animal studies indicate that it produces reproductive problems, such as reduced fertility, death of embryos and birth defects.[2] People exposed to high levels of 2-butoxyethanol for several hours have reported nose and eye irritation, headaches, vomiting and a metallic taste in their mouths. In addition to inhaling 2-butoxyethanol vapor, research has shown that skin can also absorb 2-butoxyethanol vapor from the air, making skin a major pathway of exposure to this chemical.)
o Chlorine Free (Chlorine is a toxic gas that irritates the respiratory system. Because it is heavier than air, it tends to accumulate at the bottom of poorly ventilated spaces. Chlorine gas is a strong oxidizer, which may react with flammable materials.)
o Diethylene Ether Free (1,4-Dioxane is a known eye and respiratory tract irritant. It is suspected of causing damage to the central nervous system, liver and kidneys.[3] Accidental worker exposure to 1,4-dioxane has resulted in several deaths.[4] Dioxane is classified by the IARC as a Group 2B carcinogen: possibly carcinogenic to humans because it is a known carcinogen in animals.)
o Dye Free
o Formaldehyde Free (Formaldehyde solutions are used as a fixative for microscopy and histology. Formaldehyde-based solutions are also used in embalming to disinfect and temporarily preserve human and animal remains.)
o Isopropanol Free (Isopropyl alcohol is oxidized by the liver into acetone by alcohol dehydrogenase. Symptoms of isopropyl alcohol poisoning include flushing, headache, dizziness, CNS depression, nausea, vomiting, anesthesia, and coma. Use in well-ventilated areas and use protective gloves while using. Poisoning can occur from ingestion, inhalation, or absorption.)
o Kerosene Free (Kerosene is widely used to power jet-engined aircraft (Jet fuel) and some rockets, but is also commonly used as a heating fuel and for fire toys such as poi.)
o Mineral Spirit Free
o Never Tested On Animals
o Non-toxic
o Petrochemical Free (Petrochemicals are chemical products made from raw materials of petroleum or other hydrocarbon origin.)
o Phosphate Free (A phosphate, an inorganic chemical, is a salt of phosphoric acid.)
o Phosphoric Acid Free (Phosphoric acid, used in many soft drinks (primarily cola), has been linked to lower bone density in epidemiological studies.)
o Propylene Glycol Free (Eye - Causes mild eye irritation. Contact may cause irritation, tearing, and burning pain.
Skin - Causes moderate skin irritation. Contact with the skin may cause erythema, dryness, and defatting.
Ingestion - May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Low hazard for usual industrial handling. May cause hemoglobinuric nephrosis. May cause changes in surface EEG.
Inhalation - Low hazard for usual industrial handling. May cause respiratory tract irritation.
Chronic - May cause reproductive and fetal effects. Laboratory experiments have resulted in mutagenic effects. Exposure to large doses may cause central nervous system depression. Chronic ingestion may cause lactic acidosis and possible seizures.)
o Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Free (SLS can be converted by ethoxylation to sodium laureth sulfate (sodium lauryl ether sulfate; SLES), which is less harsh on the skin, probably because it is not as much of a protein denaturant as is the unethoxylated substance.)
o Sulfuric Acid Free (Although sulfuric acid is non-flammable, contact with metals in the event of a spillage can lead to the liberation of hydrogen gas. The dispersal of acid aerosols and gaseous sulfur dioxide is an additional hazard of fires involving sulfuric acid.)

Leading Laundry Cleaning Brands in Stores Ingredients

Consumers have become much more concerned about how the products they use impact the environment in recent years. Unfortunately, it can be difficult for even highly educated consumers to find out just what ingredients are in certain products, and how they might impact the environment.

Take the leading brand laundry detergents. You certainly won't get a straight answer by looking at the ingredients label, where you typically find the following cryptic message: "Ingredients include surfactants (anionic and nonionic) and enzymes."

We cannot provide you with specific ingredients used in Tide or other name brand laundry detergents, for a couple reasons. First of all, companies are not required by law to list their ingredients, and claim that their formulations are confidential. Secondly, the ingredients they use change periodically, whether due to reformulation or simply the use of alternative ingredients to reduce costs. However, the following list of ingredients commonly used in the leading brands, along with a description of how they impact the environment, should give you a good idea of what's really inside:
Alkyl benzene sulfonates or ABS (also linear alkyl benzene sulfonates or LAS, linear alkyl sodium sulfonates).

A class of synthetic surfactants (usually identified as "anionic surfactants.") ABS are very slow to biodegrade and seldom used. LAS, however, are the most common surfactants in use. During the manufacturing process, carcinogens and reproductive toxins such as benzene are released into the environment. While LAS do biodegrade, they do so slowly and are of low to moderate toxicity. LAS are synthetic. The pure compounds may cause skin irritation on prolonged contact, just like soap. Allergic reactions are rare. Because oleo-based alternatives are available, LAS should not be used.

Alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanols (also nonyl phenoxy ethoxylate or nonyl phenol).

This is a general name for a group of synthetic surfactants. They are slow to biodegrade in the environment and have been implicated in chronic health problems. Researchers in England have found that in trace amounts they activate estrogen receptors in cells, which in turn alters the activity of certain genes. For example, in experiments they have been found to stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells and feminize male fish. One member of this family of chemicals is used as a common spermicide, indicating the general level of high biological toxicity associated with these compounds.

Artificial fragrances

Artificial fragrances are made from petroleum. Many do not degrade in the environment, and may have toxic effects on both fish and mammals. Additionally, they often can cause allergies and skin or eye irritation.

Diethanolamines (also diethanolamine, triethanolamine and monoethanolamine).

A synthetic family of surfactants, this group of compounds is used to neutralize acids in products to make them non-irritating. Diathanolamines are slow to biodegrade and they react with natural nitrogen oxides and sodium nitrite pollutants in the atmosphere to form nitrosamines, a family of

potent carcinogens.

EDTA (ethylene-diamino-tetra-acetate).

A class of synthetic, phosphate-alternative compounds used to reduce calcium and magnesium hardness in water. EDTA is also used to prevent bleaching agents from becoming active before they're immersed in water and as a foaming stabilizer. EDTA does not readily biodegrade and once introduced into the general environment can re-dissolve toxic heavy metals trapped in underwater sediments, allowing them to re-enter and re-circulate in the food chain.

Optical brighteners

Optical brighteners are a broad classification of many different synthetic chemicals that, when applied to clothing, convert UV light wavelengths to visible light, thus making laundered clothes appear "whiter." Their inclusion in any formula does not enhance or affect the product's performance in any way; they simply trick the eye. Optical brighteners do not readily biodegrade. They are toxic to fish when washed into the general environment and can create bacterial mutations. They can cause allergic reaction when in contact with skin that is then exposed to sunlight. Most optical brighteners are given trade names which consumers are unlikely to see on a label.

Petroleum distillates (also naphthas).

A broad category encompassing almost every type of chemical obtained directly from the petroleum refining process. Any ingredient listed as a "petroleum distillate" or "naphtha" should be suspect as it is, firstly a synthetic and, secondly, likely to cause one or more detrimental health or environmental effects.

Phosphates

A key nutrient in ecosystems, phosphates are natural minerals important to the maintenance of all life. Their role in laundry detergents is to remove hard water minerals and thus increase the effectiveness of the detergents themselves. They are also a deflocculating agent; that is, they prevent dirt from settling back onto clothes during washing. While relatively non-irritating and non-toxic in the environment, they nonetheless contribute to significant eutrophication of waterways and create unbalanced ecosystems by fostering dangerously explosive marine plant growth. For these reasons they are banned or restricted in many states. Products containing phosphates should be considered unacceptable.

Note: The major laundry detergent manufacturers no longer use phosphates in their formulations.

Polycarboxylates

Similar in chemical structure to certain plastics and acrylic compounds, these are relatively new, synthetic phosphate substitutes. Because they are recent additions to the consumer product chemical arsenal, however, their effects on human and environmental health remain largely unknown. Though tests show they are non-toxic, do not interfere with treatment plant operation and generally settle out with the sludge during water treatment, until further study and analysis are conducted, use of this ingredient is not recommended. Further, they are not biodegradable and are petroleum based.

Polyethylene glycol (also PEG).

Another type of anti-redeposition agent, PEG is a polymer made from ethylene oxide and is similar to some non-ionic detergents. Not considered toxic, it takes large doses to be lethal in animals. However, PEG is slow to degrade and is synthetic.

Quaternium 15

An alkyl ammonium chloride used as a surfactant, disinfectant and deodorant that releases formaldehyde, a potent toxin.

Xylene sulfonate

Xylene is a synthetic that, when reacted with sulfuric acid, creates a surfactant. Slow to biodegrade in the environment and moderately toxic.

Take advantage of the natural cleaning power of Watkins Lemon Liquid Laundry Concentrate Detergent and feel the difference from chemicals to naturally soft and pure.

There are many ways to relieve back spasms naturally. Of course there are other, shall we say non-natural ways to relieve back spasms. Various prescription drugs which aid in relaxing the muscles easing spasms and the pain. Most of us would probably choose natural means rather than drugs and all the various side effects as well as the expense of prescription drugs.

Of course there are times when prescription and over the counter drugs are necessary and beneficial. Think of ordinary aspirin and all the positive things it can do from headache relief to preventing a heart attack. Before looking at natural ways to stop back spasms, let's look at what causes these painful spasms. Back spasms are cause when muscles rapidly contract. This usually happens unexpectedly many times it's hard to determine an exact cause. Most spasm though painful doesn't last too long. Many of us have probably experienced spasms at one time or another. The problem occurs when you have repeated spasms. When this happens back spasms can really interfere in your daily life. These contractions can increase of time and even become permanent.

Some of the most common causes are:

1. Overworked muscles: Muscles can be overworked through exercise or work. Muscles become overtired resulting in rapid contraction of muscles.

2. Dehydration: Loss of fluids through exercise or heat, illness with resulting vomiting and diarrhea. Loss of fluids results in loss of essential salts and other important minerals such as calcium. This depleting of salts and minerals affect how muscles and nerves function.

3. Fatigue: Being overtired can lead to overworked muscles and dehydration can cause muscle spasms.

Based on some of these common causes the natural way to relieve back spasms can be fairly simple.

1. Don't overwork your muscles. Learn to give your muscles a rest. Exercising to the point of fatigue causes muscle break down and spasms.

2. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water both before after and during exercising or physical work. It's not necessary to drink expensive energy drinks, for most of us water is the best sports drink.

3. Get a good night sleep. When your sleep your body is healing and rebuilding. Sleep is essential to preventing back spasms. If you're doing the above you should be lowering your chance of back spasms.

Now let's take the next step. Begin strengthening your body.

1. Correct stretching before and after exercising or engaging in sports, physical work and/or exercising.

2. Develop core strength. Practice Pilates or other body weight exercises that works and strengthen the core muscles.

3. Drop those pounds! Being overweight puts a strain on your back and leaves you a candidate for back spasms and pain.

4. Eat right: Stick to a diet that limits junk carbs and includes quality protein and fresh veggie and fruits. Not only will you lose weight, but you will also be putting high quality foods, vitamins and minerals into your body.

5. Taking supplements like niacin, calcium, vitamin E and magnesium can help ease spasms. Try taking them at bedtime can help lessen night cramps.

When experiencing spasms try a cold pack/hot pack. Sometimes heat and/or cold can be very effective. One may work better for some people than another. For me cold works, for my wife she swears by heat. There are alternatives to drugs. Today most people's first reaction is to call the doctor and request a drug. We expect fast relief when many times simply resting, using a heat/cold packs and if necessary an aspirin or other over the counter pain reliever can work wonders. It's important to realize that back pain and spasms are treatable with natural treatments. Beyond direct treatments taking action by exercising and losing weight can truly bring lasting relief.

Many people are planning their family vacations now that the weather has improved a bit and spring has started to show her beautiful face again. Whether you are leaving your pet with a dog-sitter or are planning to stay close to home, it's always important to be aware of the dangers that can threaten your pet while you're not home.

"Every year, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control hotline handles over 150,000 cases of pets being poisoned, and many of those cases involved common household items." Dr. Steven Hansen of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) goes on to state that, "In our homes, the bathroom is the most dangerous spot for pets. The single most common reason for calls into the poison hotline is because pets have consumed medications."

Some substances, like over-the-counter medications, that are safe for people, can in fact be deadly for our pets. Even if owners are unsure about the toxicity of a substance, they should take precautions and keep it secured in closed containers and out of reach or view of their animals.

In some cases, it is not necessary that your dog eat or drink the potential poison; the poison can enter the animal's body in other ways such as if it comes in contact with their fur or paws. When pets groom themselves, either by licking their paws or fur, they will undoubtedly ingest the toxic substance and be at risk for toxicity.

Common Household Items Toxic To Pets

Often the most dangerous poisons for pets are certain "people foods" and over-the-counter or prescription drugs. However other common household items that are toxic to your pooch include:

• Anti-depressants can cause vomiting and in more severe case - serotonin syndrome; a dangerous condition that raises the body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure of your pet and can even cause seizures.

• Automotive and household chemicals are one of the most dangerous substances. Substances containing antifreeze, solvents and pool chemicals can poison pets. Symptoms include stomach disorders, depression, and chemical burns. Various cleaning, washing and bleaching agents can cause poisoning and respiratory problems.

• Avocado can also be dangerous when fed in large amounts. In the avocado there is a substance called "persin" which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in pets.

• Chocolate contains theobromine, which is a diuretic. Your dog may be very thirsty and urinate a lot - vomiting and diarrhea are usual symptoms as well. Here's the real danger...theobromine is also a cardiac stimulant so it could increase your dog's heart rate or cause irregular heart beats. For that same reason, it is also a good idea to keep coffee and caffeine away from your pet.

• Domestic plants can also be harmful to pets. Here is a list of the most toxic plants: azaleas and rhododendrons (during the flowering these plants contain toxins that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, coma and possibly death); tulips and daffodils (the bulbs of these plants can cause serious stomach problems, cramps, and damage to the heart); sago palm (a few seeds may be enough to cause vomiting, seizures and liver failure).

• Fertilizers used in the garden, which are made of dried blood, poultry manure and bone meal, are very attractive for pets but can be toxic for them if consumed.

• Fleas and tick medications are also dangerous. Each year thousands of animals around the world are inadvertently poisoned by these substances. Problems arise when a pet accidentally swallows these substances, or an overdose occurs (this is especially the matter for small pets).

• Food from people's table bears dangers as well. Pets and people have different metabolism. Some foods and drinks that are safe for humans can be dangerous and sometimes deadly for dogs.

• Grapes and raisins are also unsafe. Experts are not sure why, but these fruits can cause kidney failure in dogs. Even small amounts can cause problems.
• Medications for pets may be dangerous too. Pets can be poisoned and die from drugs meant to help them. The most common problems are encountered with overdose of prescribed painkillers.

• Nuts - We know for certain that Macadamia nuts are one of the most toxic nuts for dogs followed by walnuts and almonds especially bitter almonds. When dogs get into these delicious nuts we're not sure exactly what happens... because the toxic compound is unknown but dogs seem to develop tremors and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. And sometimes there is pain or swelling when you manipulate the limb or touch this area. The good news is the toxicity doesn't seem to last long; nevertheless nuts in general should be avoided.

• Onions contain the toxic ingredient, thiosulphate that causes the problem. At first you might notice some vomiting and diarrhea and your pet will become tired and lethargic. Your pet develops haemolytic anemia, which is when the red blood cells actually burst within the body. The breath in the body is much less because the red blood cells, which carry oxygen, have been reduced or destroyed.

• Over-the-counter or prescription medications for people are dangerous. Even small doses of narcotic drugs, which are okay for people, can have the opposite effect on your animals. Some of the most common and harmful drugs for dogs include non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medications, which can lead to stomach and intestinal ulcers, or kidney failure.

• Wine, Beer or other Alcoholic Beverages - A glass of that special vintage wine is definitely a NO-NO! We mentioned how dangerous grapes are so it's logical that wine is equally as bad. Beware of alcohol poisoning, which can cause liver failure and even death.

• Xylitol as the sweetener can be found in many foods, including chewing gum and candy. Xylitol causes a rapid drop of sugar in blood, which leads to weakness and cramps. Some pets liver failure was observed, too.

All of these substances have different effects to the body of your pet. Problems will often arise beginning with the gastrointestinal tract and neurology (seizures), followed by cardiac and respiratory failure, and eventually coma and death.

Pet owners should remember that although they love and enjoy many foods, consume different medications or use chemicals indoors and outdoors, all these facts could be harmful and sometimes even deadly for their pets. They should educate themselves and share useful information on harmful agents with other pet owners.

What To Do If Your Pet Is Poisoned

Gastritis or inflammation of the stomach is produced by overfeeding and too frequent feeding, or feeding with irritating food, or by the ingestion of foreign bodies or poison in the stomach. It may also be secondary to constitutional diseases.

The symptoms of gastritis are vomiting, first of the contents of the stomach, then of a thick, frothy mucus, and later, perhaps, of blood. The animal shows pain upon pressure on the stomach just at the lower border of the last ribs, which is more or less severe according to the intensity of the inflammation.

If the cat is outside and is able to get at fresh grass, it will itself eat a sufficient quantity to act as a medicine that induces nausea and vomiting, which affords temporary relief. In the house-cat this can be replaced by a cup of tea which is an old remedy used for upset stomachs in people. Brew up a strong cup of tea and allow it to cool and give your cat 1 tablespoon three times a day.

Vomiting is a common problem for cats If your cat is profusely (i.e. every few hours) vomiting then they are probably becoming dehydrated and in need of veterinary care. If your cat is still drinking water and occasionally vomiting then you could try the home remedy.

Constipation and Diarrhea

Constipation is much less frequent in the cat than in other animals. On the contrary, there is a tendency in the cat, especially in one kept in the house, to have a certain amount of looseness of the bowels, which would be looked on in other animals as suspicious. When this looseness becomes excessive, and the discharges become watery, or mixed with mucus, or even bloody, it takes the name of diarrhea.

When the diarrhea becomes chronic, or is excessively severe, it takes the name of dysentery. In this case there is usually great straining, with very little discharge at each evacuation, and sometimes protrusion of the mucous membrane. Diarrhea is frequently produced in the cat by feeding it out of soiled pans in which the milk or other food has been allowed to ferment. It is produced by irregular feeding or over-feeding the animal at one time and allowing it to starve at another. The use of fatty meat, of putrid meat, and too much liver or sour milk are also causes.

Diarrhea can be caused by a number of different things, from them eating out of a garbage can, to have parasites, to infectious agents (such as parvovirus). Most cases of diarrhea respond well to home treatment. Herbal treatment you could use Slippery Elm which is helpful for chronic diarrhea. Chamomile is useful for mild indigestion and peppermint helps with intestinal gas and cramping. Canned pumpkin is good for both.

This information is intended as an informational guide only. This is not to be substituted for professional veterinarian care. Always ask your Veterinarian for advice and have them explain why they have chosen that treatment and what the side affects are.

Internal parasites are a microscopic threat to your family dog's health. It is impossible to protect your dog from exposure to these parasites but preventative measures can be taken.

The newborn puppy is the usual victim of parasite infestation. Puppies can be infected with internal parasites in the womb but also through mother's milk. Therefore, a regular worming schedule must be maintained for all newborn puppies as well as pregnant bitches. Mothers worming treatments need to begin at or before day 40 of her pregnancy and 2 days after whelping (birth). Puppies should be wormed starting at two weeks, again at weeks five, eight, and twelve weeks of age. Young dogs should be wormed monthly until six months and in three month intervals until 1 years old. After 1, discuss worming treatments with your vet. Treatments will vary due to your family dogs environment, activity levels, time spent outdoors, and mosquito and flea population in your area.

If you are like me and have rescued a puppy as a stray or from a shelter, you may not have a history of worming treatments. You should assume if no history is available, that no treatment has began. Take your puppy to the vet along with a stool sample for testing and begin treatments.

Internal parasites can cause no symptoms at all, or mild discomfort but can also cause diarrhea, vomiting, blood in fecal matter, dehydration, blood anemia, weight loss, listlessness, cough, breathing problems, heart failure and death.

There are 2 types of internal parasites. WORMS and PROTOZOA. First we will discuss Worms.

There are three sub-categories of worms.
Nematodes
Cestodes
Heart Worms

Nematodes include Roundworms, Hookworms, and Whip worms. They are cylindrical worms and cream colored.

Roundworms are the most common form of worm infestation in dogs. Although mostly found in the intestines, they can chew through intestinal wall and live in the lungs, blood, stomach and eyes. During a roundworm infestation you are feeding the worms that rob your dog of nutrients. Symptoms of roundworm infestation include mild vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, poor hair and coat, a pot belly and sometimes a garlic odor on the dog's breath. Your family dog may also pass spaghetti-like worms in vomit and stool. Transmission of roundworms is mostly through the womb or mother's milk but can also be contracted through contaminated soil.

Hookworms feed on blood and are most commonly found in hot humid climates. They are usually confined to the small intestine. In addition to mother's milk, your dog can be infected with hookworms by eating the meat of another infected animal and through the pads of their feet or belly. Because they feed on blood, symptoms include dark or bloody red diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, weakness and diarrhea.

Whip worms are the hardest to diagnose because light infections seldom show symptoms and these worms do not produce many eggs to be detected in fecal matter. Whip worms are transmitted only by ingesting the eggs. These eggs are very resilient and can survive in any climate. These worms are reason enough to 'pick up' after your pet and dispose of fecal matter so that soil does not become contaminated with whip worm eggs. Whip worms also feed on blood and symptoms include weight loss and bloody diarrhea.

Cestodes or tapeworms have for types but generally infect the same way. Tapeworms feed off the nutrients from your dog's intestines. They grow by forming chain-like lengths. Segments of these chains break off and pass through dog's feces. These broken chains can move and are full of eggs. They will appear like grains of rice and may be seen crawling near your dog's anus. Tapeworms may grow up to several feet and are really more of a nuisance than life threatening. Symptoms may include a bigger appetite, weight loss, poor coat, and diarrhea. Tapeworms are also passed from an intermediate host. The four types are distinguished by the intermediate host from which our dogs can become infected. I will not bore you with the Latin names of each but will let you know how it is contracted. Ingestion of flies or lice, rats, mice, rabbits, freshwater fish, sheep, goats, cattle, deer, moose, fox, or coyote. Hunting dogs or scavenging dogs are most likely to become infected by tapeworms. Are the most deadly of all parasitic worms.

Heart Worms are the most deadly of all parasitic worms. Heart worms are the only worm that is not ingested by your dog but is transmitted from a mosquito bite. A mosquito bites and feeds on an infected dog. The microfilariae or larvae develop in the mosquito between 2-3 weeks. When the mosquito bites another dog, larvae enter the wound and burrow under the dog's skin. For the next 2-4 months, larvae develop under the dog's skin into immature worms which then travel via the bloodstream to the heart. Worms occupy the right side of the dog's heart and develop into adults. The scary thing is that symptoms may not begin to appear until 6-7 months after the initial infection. Once worms are in the heart, they begin to produce more larvae which means more worms.

Left untreated your dog will die of heart failure. Symptoms include reduced exercise tolerance, soft coughing, weight loss, visible pulsation of blood flow in the veins of the neck, fainting, sudden collapse and death. Treatments for heart worms are expensive, dangerous, and filled with side effects. The risks verses benefits must be weighed. This being said, the very best way to protect your dog is to protect him through preventative medicine.

Heart worm medicines, prescribed by your vet could be given year round, and is the preferred plan of action. These pills or chewable are given monthly and don't prevent the transmission of heart worms but rather kill the immature worms before they have time to mature to adulthood. If not medicated year round, treatments need to start one month before the mosquito season and continued until one month after the first winter freeze. Also keep dogs indoors especially at dusk during mosquito season. If indoors is not an option, treat your dog's coat with a natural mosquito repellent.

The pest thing about heart worm medication is that it also kills most other worm parasites. An excellent argument for maintaining a heart worm medication plan year round.

The second type of internal parasite is Protozoal Parasites. Protozoa are microscopic single cell animals. We know of at least 7 different species of protozoa. Because most of them cause little to no obvious sign of disease and are treatable with antibiotics we will just give a brief synopsis of each.

Coccidiosis
Transmits through animal feces
Infects the intestines
Symptoms are watery diarrhea that may become mucus covered and tinged with blood, loss of appetite and dehydration
Treat with antibiotics and antiprotozoal drugs

Giardiasis
Transmits through water that is contaminated by wildlife
Usually no obvious signs of disease
Symptoms are persistently bulky, smelly stools
Treat with antibiotics and antiprotozoal drugs

Toxoplasmosis
Transmits through undercooked or raw meat
Symptoms are fever loss of appetite, breathing difficulty, and swollen abdomen
Treat with antibiotics

Neospora Caninum
Known to transmit from mother to pup within the uterus via placenta
This is an emerging disease that is not understood. The life cycle is not established.
Symptoms appear in 3-6 month old puppies. They include muscle and nerve conditions ranging from lameness, sore muscles, muscle wasting and paralysis.
Drugs are being developed to treat this emerging disease.

Leishmaniasis
Transmission from Sand fly bites
The most serious infection caused by protozoa which causes the disease called Kala-Azar.
There are 2 types of this protozoa, the non fatal cutaneous form which causes crusty, dandruff y areas that may become discolored or ulcerated. And the almost always fatal visceral form which causes a loss of vigor, emaciated muscles, and damage to the liver and the spleen. Even when treated, the outlook for the dog is not good. It usually result in death.

Babesiosis
Transmitted by ticks
Symptoms include listlessness due to anemia and the passing of dark colored urine
Infection affects the red blood cells
Treated with antibiotics

American Trypanosomiasis
Transmits through a bloodsucking insect called 'kissing bugs'. The 'kissing bug' defecates while feeding which results in an itch. The host scratches and gets the feces into the wound.
Symptoms include enlarged lymph nodes, fever, loss of coordination, may also affect heart muscles.
There is currently no treatments for this infection.

When radioactivity was first identified in the 1800s, scientists did not yet know about the dangerous effects of radiation and radioactive materials on human health. Many of the first scientists to research radioactivity developed radiation poisoning, cancer, and other diseases as a direct result of their contact with radioactive materials. Since then we have learned about the dangers of radioactive materials and how to protect people from them.

There are many types of radiation, some of which are more harmful to human health than others. Short-term exposure to gamma radiation--a form of very high energy radiation--can cause traumatic damage to any part of the body. Gamma radiation can pass through almost any barrier, even including many concrete walls, so the damage it can inflict to our soft internal organs is immense.

The two most common symptoms of radiation poisoning are vomiting and nausea. Symptoms may take some time after exposure to develop. Mild cases of radiation poisoning may take one or two days to develop, in some cases longer. In general, the sooner symptoms appear after exposure, the greater the risk to the patient's health.

Moderate doses of radiation can cause hair loss and bloody vomit in addition to nausea, with symptoms setting in within a day of exposure. Severe radiation poisoning shows symptoms within an hour of exposure, including diarrhea and high fever. Very high doses of radiation can cause dizziness, disorientation, and a drop in blood pressure. Half of all people who suffer severe poisoning parish.

Common sources of radiation poisoning include direct exposure to many radioactive materials, such as being in the same room as a sample of uranium without adequate protection. The waste byproducts of nuclear power plants can also cause radiation sickness if they are not contained and disposed of properly. Nuclear weapons, which have not been used in warfare since the American bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, use radiation as their primary destructive force.

Radiation can cause damage to the cells' DNA, encouraging the development of cancer. You may have heard of radiation being used to treat cancer, but that is a side-effect of the ability of radioactive substances to destroy cancer cells as well. Cancer doctors use small, very precise doses of specific types of radiation to kill cancer cells without damaging the other parts of the body.

If you or someone you love has suffered from radiation poisoning, and you believe another person's negligence is at fault, you may be able to win compensation for your medical bills, losses, and suffering. Hypoglycemia for small dogs is one of the most dangerous and deadly conditions that a toy breed puppy can encounter. If you are considering purchasing a toy breed dog you should consider doing some research on hypoglycemia in puppies before bringing your new puppy home. It could make the difference in saving your puppy's life. Hypoglycemia in simpler terms means low blood sugar. Glucose in the form of sugar is found within your puppy's bloodstream. Glucose is formed during the digestion of food, which can then be stored within your puppy's liver in the form of glycogen.

Inadequate nutrition is a contributing source of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar in puppies. Inadequate nutrition can be caused by not enough intake of food or feeding your puppy poor quality 'un-digestible' food. Additionally, excessive activity or exercise can also cause your puppy's body to use more sugar than is available. Juvenile hypoglycemia may be suspected when puppies, especially toy breeds such as Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terriers, and Toy Poodles show signs of weakness, vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe cases of juvenile hypoglycemia in your puppy can result in a coma or death. Puppies less than 3 or 4 months of age require strong blood sugar levels while their immature systems sometimes lack the ability to regulate glucose.

If your puppy is sluggish due to low blood sugar, it is imperative to immediately provide your puppy a source of sugar. Karo Syrup and honey are fabulous sources of sugar and should be fed to your puppy immediately. Following a hypoglycemic episode you should have a thorough exam performed by a licensed veterinarian. Your veterinarian?s exam will help determine if the low blood sugar is simply the result of inadequate nutrition or a more severe underlying disease.

After a hypoglycemic episode, you will want to monitor your puppy's food intake and be aware of any changes in your puppy's energy level. If your puppy is initially reluctant to return to their normal eating habits, feeding them boiled chicken will serve as a satisfactory supplementation. As your puppy grows and gets bigger, the risk factors for hypoglycemia will diminish. With a proper diet and continued care your puppy's teeth will get stronger, their body will begin to store fat, and their immune system will mature. Eventually, the risks of hypoglycemia will become minimal and your puppy can continue life as any other happy and healthy puppy.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION & RESOURCES

Hypoglycemia is defined as a blood glucose or blood sugar concentration of less than 70 milligrams per deciliter(mg/dl) of blood. Symptoms depend on how quickly the blood glucose concentration decreases but rarely occur until it falls below 50 mg/dl.

Contributing "Triggers" for Hypoglycemic Attacks:

* Cold temperatures
* Intestinal parasites
* Digestive upsets that prevent absorption of nutrients
* Illness resulting in a diminishing appetite
* Moving to a new environment
* Anything that puts a strain or stress on your puppy

Signs Your Puppy May Be Suffering a Hypoglycemic Attack:

* Weakness, lack of energy
* Lack of coordination
* Disoriented
* Froth at the mouth
* Seizure

Good Sources of Sugar to "Boost" Your Puppies Blood Sugar:

* Karo syrup
* Honey
* Sugar water
* Nutrical

IMPORTANT INFORMATIONAL TIP:

Even if your puppy is too lethargic to swallow, these products can be absorbed into the tissues if smeared on the gums and in the roof of the mouth.

A number of these foods will only cause a mild upset stomach for you pet while others -that I will elaborate further upon could cause major illness or even death.

Onions: The toxins that can build up in a dogs system can cause anaemia -if the dog is eating onions on a regular bases. If the white of the dogs eyes turn yellow and/or if the dog has a tongue that is pale in color -then these are signs that the dog has extreme toxins in the system. Other key signals include: urine -dark in color, vomiting and diarrhea.

Chocolate: Is toxic to the nervous system and heart, if a dog is fed too much chocolate diarrhea and vomiting will more then likely occur. The liver and Kidneys of a dog can not break down Theo-bromine which is found in chocolate and over time the build up of this chemical could be fatal to the animal.

Chicken and fish bones: These can cause digestive system lacerations. When these bones have been cooked -is when they are actually the most dangerous because they become brittle and are much more likely to splinter.

Currants: Which are many different kinds of tart red or black berries -used primarily for jellies and jams. The problem with currants is that it contains a toxin that has been associated with kidney damage.

Mushrooms: The most commonly reported severely toxic species of mushroom is the Amanita phalloides. In the US toxicity does occur in dogs and it can be fatal if certain species of mushrooms are eaten. They can cause severe liver disease and neurological disorders. If your dog does ingest mushrooms you should induce vomiting and charcoal may also be needed.

Yeast Dough: Can cause a rupture of the stomach by the accumulation of gas in your dog's digestive system. If the dough is properly cooked then it is OK for your dog as long as it's no more then 10% of the overall intake of food that your dog consumes on a daily basis.

Cat Food: Most cat food has a higher calorie content and higher protein percentage, an occasional bite of cat food probably wont hurt your dog. Too much protein in a dogs diet however, and the dog will most likely gain too much weight -and thus sustain a lack of nutrients they are missing from their own food.

Raw eggs: This one has been very controversial with veterinarians... however there is proof that too much raw eggs decrease the absorption of vitamin B (biotin) in dogs. Raw eggs have been known to help a pets hair coat -but you do run the risk of salmonella.

Raisins: Typically if a dog eats raisins they will vomit within a couple of hours and some dogs will even develop diarrhea. This is when kidney damage most likely will accrue from an unknown toxin. Very small amounts probably wont do much harm -but treatment with intravenous fluids are highly recommended if large amounts are ingested.

It is important to be educated on ALL of the hazards that certain foods can cause your pet -as they have a much different metabolism then we humans and other animal species do. The bottom line here is this: What you don't know can cause serious illness or death to your beloved dog so please -take the time to learn the best ways to protect and care for them properly!

Basic Knowledge

Swine Flu is caused by Influenza virus A (H1 N1). We need first to explain what's type A and what are H & N. Influenza viruses are divided into 3 main categories A,B&C ; A virus causes world wide epidemics (pandemics) of influenza , B virus causes major outbreaks while C virus only causes mild respiratory tract infection. The pandemics caused by influenza A virus occur nearly every 10-20 years, but major outbreaks caused by this virus occur virtually every year in various countries.

The key to the persistence of the influenza virus is its genetic material and antigenic composition. It's major surface antigens are hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). The H antigen is used to bind to host cells, while N Antigen cleaves budding viruses from infected cells. Hemagglutinin has 4 subtypes (H1, H2, H3 and H5) and N antigen has 2 (N1 and N2) that have caused human disease. The surface antigens can change or (shift) over time. H & N Antigens change continuously reflecting mutations in their genetic material where antigenic shift occurs when a major change occurs in the antigens and this shift often triggers a pandemic, because humans often have little or even no pre-existing immunity to the new strain.

Mode of infection

Swine flu virus spread like any other influenza virus by droplets or aerosols.

Incubation period

1-4 days ( The period before appearance of symptoms).

Clinical manifestations

Unfortunately swine flu has the same symptoms like usual human flu and this includes:

Sudden increase of body temperature, cough, malaise , anorexia ,  headache , muscle aches , rhinitis and respiratory distress ( it may or may not be accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea) .

Laboratory diagnosis

Swine flu is diagnosed by nasopharyngeal swabs , washes or aspirates of specimens taken early in the course of the disease. The virusus are fragile and need to be handled carefully; and specimens should never be frozen.

Prevention

As there's no treatment available yet the only way we have to avoid being infected or to enhance our immunity is by following these measures :

- Avoid crowded places (you can wear masks) - Avoid kisses if you are not sure of your kisser - Wash your hands frequently with water and soap ( specially if you sneeze) - Always provide good airing - Drink water and fluids as much as you can specially Ginger ( to increase immunity ) - Useful foods to increase immunity are cantaloupe, apple, guava, honey, lettuce and radish - Use vitamins specially vitamins A & C and antioxidants.

I hope this information will help you to pass this hard period.

Optimal digestive health is associated with mental well-being, good immunity and systemic health. It is also linked to the ever-popular topic of weight management. Consumer awareness of these issues and the easy availability of natural and herbal digestive health aids have led to the growing expansion of the digestive health supplement industry.

It is believed that approximately 75 to 100 million Americans suffer from some sort of digestive ailment. Common digestive ailments include constipation, diarrhea, abdominal bloating and pain, nausea, loss of appetite and inexplicable weight gain. Three major ingredients top the list of digestion supplements within the digestive health industry: prebiotics, probiotics and digestive enzymes.

Supplementing Digestion: Probiotics

The typical American diet lacks fiber content and is high in fats, carbohydrates and refined and processed foods. This kind of diet generally promotes the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria which are harmful for the digestive system. The imbalance between probiotics and pathogenic bacteria can lead to under-absorption of nutrients, poor immunity and unnecessary weight gain. The ingestion of friendly bacteria, therefore, plays a major role in supporting healthy digestion.

Certain strains of probiotics such as Acidophilus and Bifidus help promote the absorption of minerals such as calcium, copper, iron and magnesium. An optimal intestinal microflora helps the body manufacture enzymes, vitamins A, certain B vitamins and vitamin K.

The sale of probiotics has risen dramatically since 2003 when the concept of friendly bacteria was first introduced to the American public. In 2008, the Datamonitor valued the US market for probiotics at $1,526.7 million. This was an increase of 160 percent from 2003. As more research throws light on the role of particular probiotics strains for specific health conditions, the probiotic supplement industry is predicted to boom.

Key consumer targets are aging baby boomers, though with recent research on infants and probiotics, infants, too, are a high potential market.

Supplementing Digestion: Prebioitics

Prebiotics are soluble and insoluble fiber. A few examples are psyllium husk, flax seeds and fructooligosaccharides (FOS). Prebiotics are not only needed for adding bulk to waste matter for easier movement along the digestive tract, but they also form food for probiotics. Probiotics acts upon prebiotics. This chemical reaction produces nutrients, such as short-chain fatty acid (SCFA), that are vital to health. SCFA help to regulate healthy cholesterol and glucose levels. The colon is the place where a balance between potassium-sodium levels is maintained. This, in turn, regulates healthy blood pressure. Research shows that prebiotics may also play a role in healthy weight loss.

Synbiotic Supplements

More Americans are recognizing the role of probiotics and prebiotics as essential to digestive health. Since both complement each other, combination synbiotic supplements have begun to show popular consumer appeal.

Supplementing Digestion: Digestive Enzymes

Arising from the popularity of probiotics and prebiotics, digestive enzymes have become the newest addition to digestive supplements. Enzymes work as catalysts in the breaking down of food to smaller nutrients that the body can easily absorb. A diet based on refined and processed foods not only reduces daily nutritive value but also kills enzymes present in raw foods. Overeating and a high intake of fats and calories can overburden the digestive system. Stressful lifestyles add to gastrointestinal strain. In such an environment, enzymes help to optimize digestion.

Enzyme supplements can be classified as digestive aids and systemic aids. Some people are deficient in main digestive enzymes such as lactase, amylase, papain and bromelain. Deficiency of these enzymes can result in bouts of constipation, diarrhea, abdominal bloating and discomfort after eating food. Supplementing with the right digestive enzymes can help.

Enzymes for systemic health support the breakdown of proteins and research indicates that they may prove useful in treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Celiac disease. Research also suggests that protesases with fibrinolytic activity may help support healthy blood pressure and cardiovascular health.

Market experts have noted a steady rise in enzyme supplements since 2001 and predict a continuing rise in the sale of digestive supplements in the coming years.

Growing Consumer Need for Digestive Aids

Stressful lifestyles and poor dietary habits have created a large community of people who suffer from digestive problems. An awareness of digestive health and digestive health supplements is generating a highly explosive market potential. Increased promotional efforts and consumer education still need to be engaged to further boost the consumption of digestive health aids.

An experienced supplement manufacturer can guide you into the right formulations for prebiotics, probiotics and digestive enzymes or combination supplements. Manufacturers who have a fully-equipped advanced lab setup offer an additional advantage that can help you quickly and efficiently produce a line of digestive health supplements based on reliable scientific data. Quality manufacturing is necessary as delivery forms must contain active strains at consumer end for maximizing health benefits.

When to Call Your Physician or Midwife

Painful menstrual-like cramps.

Dull ache in the lower back(If you have had a dull backache throughout the pregnancy, then this symptom is only a danger sign if it is different from the backache you've had before.)

Pain or pressure above the pubic bone(in the area of the pubic hair.)

Sensation of pressure or heaviness in the pelvic region.

Increase in vaginal secretions, including loss of the mucous plug.

Change in the type of vaginal secretion(for example, from thick to thin or watery.)

Bloody discharge from the vagina.

Diarrhea.

Uterine contractions occurring 10 minutes apart or more frequently for more than 1 hour; even if they are not painful(a contraction is palpated when the top of your uterus-the fundus-gets hard, softens, and hardens again). If these disappear when you lie down, they are probably not labor:

Symptoms of urinary tract infection-pain or burning on urination, especially at the end of urination; urgency-an unusually strong feel of the need to urinate, especially if you actually urinate very small amounts; frequency-needing to urinate very often(although this may be difficult for pregnant women to differentiate from the usual increased frequency of late pregnancy).

Any leakage of fluid from the vagina. This can be a big gush or a continuous dripping of watery fluid. This may indicate rupture of the membranes.

If your work involves heavy physical labor, rotating or night shifts, long periods of standing, or makes you excessively tired, consider changing or reducing your workload. Unfortunately, women in the United States are not uniformly guaranteed paid maternity leave.

As sexually transmitted infections may be implicated in premature rupture of the membranes and preterm labor, you should use a condom if you are at risk for such an infection. Being at risk means that either you or your partner has more than one sexual partner. If you have any doubt about whether this is the case for your partner, or you have had a pre term birth, you should use condoms. In fact, because semen contains prostaglandins-body chemicals that cause uterine contractions-use of a condom from midpregnancy to 37 weeks gestation is a good idea for any woman who has had a previous preterm birth. The condoms provide a barrier between your body and your partner's semen.

If you have a history of pre term labor or signs of preterm labor, avoid nipple or breast stimulation in the third trimester, before 37 weeks gestation, as this initiates uterine contractions. Abstain from orgasm if there is any question of threatened preterm labor, as it can lead to contractions.
There is some evidence, although not conclusive, that calcium supplementation may help prevent preterm labor. Routine calcium supplementation is not currently advised in pregnancy, but you should certainly maintain an adequate dietary intake of calcium sources. Except for sometimes causing constipation, a calcium supplement is not dangerous in pregnancy. If you have had a preterm birth, discuss with your physician or midwife whether or not they advise calcium supplementation as a possible preventive measure.

In the 1980s, some promising studies showed that preterm birth might be prevented with frequent prenatal visits and vaginal examinations for women at risk for preterm labor. A number of "Prevention of Preterm" birth programs were funded by various governmental and private agencies. Unfortunately, these did not demonstrate that such measures were uniformly valuable in preventing preterm birth. Whether or not to do weekly or biweekly vaginal examinations or ultrasounds to check the cervix in the third trimester for women with a previous preterm birth remains controversial.

Your purebred puppies health should be of utmost concern to you.

You want a healthy puppy that is free of parasites and on good food. Nutrition is very important- especially in the first year of life.

There are many diseases that the new puppy may come in contact with and it is these puppy vaccinations that help build resistance to the viral attacks.

Though there are multiple ailments and diseases, I will attempt to briefly list and discuss only a few of the more common ones in this puppy article. As always, puppy vaccinations are the best preventive method.

Parvovirus (parvo). This is a very serious disease. It attacks the intestinal system and is a viral disease of dogs. Parvo is characterized by severe, bloody diarrhea and vomiting, high fever and lethargy. The diarrhea is particularly foul smelling and is sometimes yellow in color. Parvo can also attack a dog's heart causing congestive heart failure. Remember, without medical treatment, most puppies die from Parvo.

Distemper. This disease attacks every tissue in the body and may occur through inhalation of the virus in a contaminated area. Signs of the disease often resemble a bad cold with fever at first though the later stages may result in vomiting, high fever, diarrhea, convulsions and thickening/cracking of the nose and pads. Death is common and dogs and who recover may have future nervous damage. Simple puppy vaccinations are the best prevention.

Hepatitis. Spread through contact with contaminated urine or feces. This affects the kidneys and liver- often dogs will have high fever, lack of appetite, vomiting/diarrhea with blood, and depression. Often affected animals will have chronic health problems and recovered dogs will pass infected urine for months after infection. Again, vaccinations are the best preventive method.

Leptospirosis (Lepto). Affect the liver and kidneys and can be transmitted to man via contact with the urine of an infected dog. Signs such as vomiting and thirst, bloody diarrhea, depression, and jaundice may occur. Antiobiotic treatment is important though the best prevention is through vaccination.

Rabies. Transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, rabies is another disease that may be spread to humans. The disease affects the nervous tissues and causes paralysis and death (always). Again, vaccinations are your best weapon against this disease. Below find a brief listing of other common problems of which you should be aware.

Kennel cough. Kennel cough deals with bacterial and/or viral infections in the upper respiratory tract. Symptoms of kennel cough are a constant wheezing cough. Highly contagious as well!

Other symptoms to watch for in your new purebred puppy:

Vomiting. Occasional vomiting is not uncommon but consult your vet if the problem persists or if blood, diarrhea or pain accompany the vomiting.

Diarrhea. Can be caused by a number of things- viruses, food, internal parasites, and bacteria to name a few. Contact the vet if the stool is bloody, continues for an excessive amount of time, or if dehydration occurs. Once your pup has recovered, return it to its food slowly and in decreased but frequent portions.

Constipation. Can be caused by multiple factors also such as insufficient water intake, disease or ingestion of a foreign substance. While your vet may have to take blood tests to find the cause, usually a diet high in fiber and exercise will help prevent this problem.

Not to scare you in any way, I do hope this information will assure you of just how important those puppy vaccinations are to your new puppies (and your) health. Proper immunizations are the best prevention in the endless war on disease and may save your puppy, and yourself, a lot of discomfort, grief and pain- and possibly even death. Here's to healthy and happy puppy owning.

Have you heard of Clavamox for cats? Antibiotics are useful tools in the modern medical arsenal. They can save lives: yours and your cat's. However the use of antibiotics has many unpleasant consequences, for you, your pets, and for the world.

Clavamox, while a solid and useful antibiotic, combining amoxicillin and clavulanate, is no exception. If you want to avoid using Clavamox or other antibiotics on your cats, however, the best time is before your pet is ill: prevention is the ideal approach to reducing undesirable use of any medication.

Clavamox, like the amoxicillin it is based on, is known to cause side effects. When dosed with Clavamox cats may suffer loose stools and diarrhea. Some animals experience vomiting, and no pet should be dosed with Clavamox when it is known to have an allergy or sensitivity to amoxicillin or related antibiotics.

Further, the antibiotic is formulated to be particularly effective at attacking amoxicillin-resistant strains of bacteria, using Clavulanate as an enzyme suppressant allowing the amoxicillin to perform an end-run around the chemical resistance of the bacteria. If we have already been forced once to find a way around resistance, do we want to be forced to find another end-run fifty years down the line?

The less we prescribe Clavamox for cats, or for any animal including humans, the less likely a resistant strain is to develop.

It is better to do everything possible to avoid using antibiotics in the first place, by managing the health of ourselves and our pets through natural means dependent on life-style, natural diet and supplements.

Keeping you cat in a clean, sanitary indoors environment is the very first step in maintaining your cat's health. After that consider a natural diet based on meat: cats are obligate carnivores and do not process non-meat substances well, if at all. Low ash content and moist food can help reduce UTIs (urinary tract infections) and supplements containing cantharis, uva ursi, and other natural ingredients can provide natural antiseptic and diuretic effects, helping your cat maintain a strong and germ free metabolism through natural homeopathic substances.

Even if your cat does come down with an infection and your vet chooses to prescribe Clavamox for cats with UTIs and other bacterial outbreaks, you can support your cat's recovery using natural substances. The same formulas that can help avoid infection in the first place can reinforce and support the effectiveness of the clavamox.

Using these substances is an effective way to ensure that the antibiotic leaves few if any bacteria to reproduce and start a new, resistant infection. Remember, prescribing Clavamox for cats may be necessary, but allowing that prescription to leave resistant strains behind is not.

Confer with your vet before putting your cat on any supplement, either before or during a period when you must provide Clavamox for cats' health. Follow dosing instructions carefully, with both the supplements and the antibiotic: remember it is best for you, your cat, and the world to use antibiotics as seldom as possible and with as little backlash as can be arranged.

When their health can be maintained with natural methods rather than Clavamox cats are happier, and lead better lives, with fewer side effects...and so do you.

Treatment of diarrhea can begin at home if there are no severe symptoms that accompany it.

- Begin hydration immediately with water and clear fluids.

- Avoid alcohol or caffeinated drinks during diarrhea treatment as they can dehydrate.

- Milk will prolong diarrhea treatment so, for more severe cases, avoid it as well.

- For moderate or severe diarrhea, drink electrolyte liquids such as Gatorade or Pedialyte. Electrolytes help chronic diarrhea treatment as they conduct signals throughout the body. Dehydration, that often accompanies diarrhea, can cause a severe electrolyte imbalance.

- If nausea is present, suck on ice chips to keep hydrated during diarrhea treatment.

Your diet is also critical in diarrhea treatment.

- Begin by eating a probiotic yogurt. Probiotics have been shown to ease the symptoms of diarrhea and helps to shorten diarrhea treatment.

- Incorporate the BRAT diet as well. BRAT stands for banana, rice, apples (or applesauce), and dry toast. These foods are usually recommended for children, but adults will benefit as well. All of these foods may help shorten the need for treatment of diarrhea. The diet does not need to be restricted to them, but they will help.

- Avoid greasy or fried foods as they can exacerbate the problem. After the diarrhea treatment has passed, it is advised to avoid fried foods and alcohol to prevent a recurrence.

Treatment of diarrhea rests on getting enough rest. The body is going to be severely drained during a bout. Electrolyte imbalances lead to muscle weakness. Dehydration can lead to dizziness or weakness. Take care of yourself first so that you can get better. Unless you are told to by a doctor, avoid taking diarrhea medications. This can prevent the body from expelling what is causing the problem.

When should diarrhea treatment be given to the professionals? For newborns, any vomiting or diarrhea should be immediately reported to the pediatrician. For children over about 3 months, any vomiting that lasts more than a few hours should be reported. For adults, if diarrhea persists for more than three days, then go to the doctor. Other signs that will require medical chronic diarrhea treatment include:

- Bloody stools

- Black or oily stools

- Abdominal pain that persists after a bowel movement

- Severe dehydration issues like dizziness or muscle cramps

- An accompanying fever of over 101 in adults (100.4 in children)

- Diarrhea that occurs immediately after foreign travel

- If more than one person you recently ate with experience diarrhea as well.

- Diarrhea that comes right after starting a new medication.

In a world where there has been a pet food recall, some dog owners feel they want to make their own dog food. This is a great idea because you know exactly what is going in your dog's tummy. But do you know what foods are actually dangerous for Fido? Let me list the most dangerous and also tell you WHY they shouldn't be eaten so you can save yourself from unnecessary Vet bills or something we don't even want to think about...the death of your beloved pet.

1. Chocolate: This means ALL chocolate even though the high cocoa content chocolate and Baker's chocolate are the most toxic. To reach toxicity you only need 2 baking squares for a 10lb dog, 4 baking squares for a 20 lb dog, etc. It contains theobromine which is a diuretic and cardiac stimulant.

Side Effects: vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, seizures, increased drinking and urinating and even death.

2. Alcohol: If you think it's funny to watch your dog get intoxicated, think again. You can cause Fido to go into cardiac arrest and die. Not so funny anymore, now is it. They can't handle alcohol and it only takes a small amount to get them intoxicated.

Side Effects: depression, excessive urination, excitement, slowed breathing rate and cardiac arrest which can lead to death.

3. Fatty Foods: Yes, you know them well because you probably eat them yourself and know how bad they are for YOU. Gravies, bacon, high fat snacks, etc. can all be fatal in some dogs.

Side Effects: severe gastrointestinal distress and something called Pancreatitis which can be fatal.

4. Raisins and Grapes: This is one of those foods where the toxin is not known yet but is extremely dangerous and there is NO treatment for it.

Side Effect: acute kidney failure. It only takes as little as 6 grapes and raisins.

5. Potato Peelings and Tomato Leaves & Stems: These both contain a toxic alkaloid called solanine.

Side Effects: severe gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weakness, dilated pupils, damage to the central nervous system and slower heart rate.

6. Avocado: This fruit contains a toxin principle called PERSIN. It's also in the leaves, the seeds and the bark. All avocados have the potential to be toxic for dog's however, the variety from Guatemala is the most toxic.

Side Effects: diarrhea, vomiting and gastrointestinal distress.

7. Macadamia Nuts: The toxin in these nuts is unknown, it only takes a small number of nuts and even the butter in them to make it toxic for your dog.

Side Effects: affects their nervous system, digestive track and their muscles.

8. Coffee: Contains dangerous components called xanthenes.

Side Effects: urinary damage, heart muscle stimulation and damage to their nervous system.

9. Peaches, Cherries, Plums, Apples and Apricots: The fruit itself is fine. It's the leaves, stems and seeds that contain a cyanide compound. Large amounts of them are toxic.

Side Effects: hyperventilation, dilated pupils, breathing difficulties and shock.

10. Xylitol: This is an artificial sweetener that is found in SUGAR FREE products like gum, candy, etc.

Side Effects: sudden drop in blood sugar and seizures.

11. Onions: Thiosulphate is the toxin in onions. This goes for onion powder as well. One good thing about this is that they will eventually recover from this toxin when it leaves their body.

Side Effect: Extreme anemia. (as little as one small onion can cause this)

12. Yeast dough: Believe it or not if your dog swallows yeast dough it will rise in his stomach and it will end up being very painful for them.

Side Effects: Severe gastrointestinal distress, vomiting, diarrhea and bloating.

Please use common sense when it comes to feeding your dog and if he accidentally eats any of the above foods, get to your Vet immediately. Getting there in time can save your dog's life.

Feline bloody stool is something to be concerned about. This can be a sign of a number of medical problems, so it is important to take your cat to the vet. Before you do, you should have a list of the symptoms you have noticed, which will help your vet make a conclusive diagnosis. Beyond that, knowing the best way to treat these symptoms and cure the underlying cause will prevent your cat from having to endure this condition in the future. In the article you'll learn the symptoms, causes and treatments for blood in cat stool and how to help your cat.

Symptoms of Feline Bloody Diarrhea & Blood in Stool

Beyond seeing blood in your cat's stool or diarrhea, you may also notice one or more of the following symptoms. Since noting these symptoms will be helpful to your vet, make sure to write them down:

  • Sudden weight loss

  • Drinking excessive water

  • Loss of appetite

  • Frequent bowel movements (more than usual)

  • Decrease in activity, lethargy

  • Exertion or pain during defecation

Causes of Feline Bloody Diarrhea

The causes of blood in diarrhea can include one or more of the following:

  • Bacterial infection

  • Bowel inflammation or colitis

  • Parasites

  • Ingestion of household poisons or foods that cause allergic reactions

  • Antibiotics

Treating Feline Blood Stool

Since blood in diarrhea or stool can be indicative of digestion problems, make sure to feed your cat quality food. Many pet owners do not understand that canned cat food and kibble are processed foods. Some of these food contain dyes, fillers, additives and preservatives. These are not healthy for your cat. Feed your cat natural food that is high in fiber, low in fat and has good quality protein. Refrain from giving your cat table scraps.

If your cat has worms, use a de-worming medication to get rid of them, but do your research before considering the use of other medications or drugs. One of the causes of feline bloody diarrhea is antibiotics, so administering them to treat a symptom that is caused by them is obviously not a smart course of action. Antibiotics have side effects and suppress symptoms, but do not cure the problem. This is why pet owners around the world are turning to homeopathic remedies to treat and prevent problems in the colon and urinary tract.

These remedies contain ingredients that work as effectively as antibiotics, but have no side effects. They work at the cellular level to heal symptoms like feline bloody stool and the conditions that gave rise to it. They will fortify your cat's immunity and since they are gentle and affordable, they can be used daily to prevent problems from recurring. Best of all, they are convenient: you just sprinkle them on your cat's food or put a few granules in your cat's mouth.

Since all natural remedies are not created equal, be sure to do your research. Look for remedies that contain proven ingredients like berberis, cantharis and uva ursi.

Ear Infection

An ear infection is an infestation in the ear, caused by either bacteria or by virus. The adult ear infection and the inner ear infection are other names by which it is called. The scientific name is otitis media.

Ear Infection Causes

An ear infection may be caused by one or a combination of the following factors. Within the ear are tiny bones which help translate sound waves to the brain. The sound waves travel to these bones through the Eustachian tube, which in children is placed in more of a level position. When liquid is introduced to the ear through swimming or bathing, and if the liquid is not cleaned out by a swab, it may linger there and allow bacteria to fester. Though the Eustachian tube is more slanted in adults, similar infestation may occur if water is not cleared.

Even without water, ear wax may build up, also leaving the ear open to bacterial infestation. Ear wax build up should be cleared regularly, especially because viruses may speed up the possibility of infection.

Ear Infection Symptom

There are many ear infection symptom to be aware of. Feeling pressure in the ear, or even an earache, is indicative of the general build up of fluid or pus in the infected area. The infection may cause dizziness, nausea, or a feeling of fatigue.

Headaches, ringing, hearing loss, and ear drainage may also develop. Often, as symptoms grow more severe, blurry vision, vomiting, and diarrhea may also occur. These symptoms are more prevalent in children, who suffer an ear infection four times as often as adults do.

Ear Infection Prevention

Prevention is the best way to avoid an ear infection. Because the Eustachian tubes are connected to the sinuses, many nasal sprays have appeared on the market to help flush out the build up and bacteria in the Eustachian tubes as well as the nasal passages and the sinuses.

Many of the nasal sprays and other medicines available include xylitol, which is a natural substance found in fruits and vegetables and used in our everyday metabolism. Xylitol is looks and tastes like sugar, though it contains fewer calories and zero net carbs. Xylitol is a natural bacteria repellant used to prevent more than just ear infection. "Xylitol Glossary of Prevention and Benefits" explains more of the benefits associated with the use of xylitol.

In understanding ear infection and its symptoms, prevention becomes the natural step. Xylitol as a leading ingredient is proven to reduce ear infection risk.

Emergency hospitals are very difficult to open, but are a necessity to pet health care. The issue comes about in financial backing. To operate an emergency pet health center, you have to maintain the same amount of staff but see fewer clients so the charges are usually a lot more to make up the difference. They have to pay the bills too, you know. Secondly, human emergency hospitals are subsidized by state and federal money while animal hospitals are not. Most emergency hospitals are just able to break even and the investors only make money through the appreciation of the land and building it occupies. A client's inability to pay can easily make this break-even business loose money and eventually fail.

All veterinary hospitals are compassionate about pets and realize the strain that strays put on Good Samaritans. People who care for strays and maintain their pet's health do have options though for the care of these animals. For spays and neuters there is a statewide program that veterinarians offer that can save $60 to $70 dollars per procedure. This program is supported by various organizations and funding. Your local veterinarian will have more information on low cost or reduced spaying and neutering. Also, there are multiple local rescue groups can offer assistance through local community donations and national grants. For vaccinations, in the spring, many veterinary hospitals offer low-cost vaccine clinics.

On the medical side there are two other great options, pet insurance and medical credit cards. Pet insurance is fairly new but it offers many different levels of plans that can help with normal yearly pet health procedures and/or emergencies. Your veterinarian will have information to help you decide which plan is best for you or what plans they currently accept. On the credit card side there is a wonderful company named Care Credit. If accepted for this card, depending on where it is used, you can get three to twelve months same as cash to help with emergencies.

There are certain drugs that you can use in emergencies at home if you have pet health incidents and there is not an emergency animal care clinic around. Anti-histamines can be used with allergic reactions. For vomiting and diarrhea you can use medicine to combat diarrhea. And for pain relief, aspirin can be given very sparingly. Do not give drugs such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or naproxen. These medications can cause severe ulcers in the stomach. Ask your local veterinarian about dosages to keep handy for your pet in case emergencies should arise. Also, when looking for a veterinarian, ask them about their emergency policies and their hours of operation. Remember, there are always options.

After the initial pet health exam ask for an estimate so you understand what the veterinarian is offering, and if that estimate is higher than you can afford don't panic. Ask for options, a lot of times there are treatments that are less expensive but can be much more labor intensive for the owner. Another option available to pet owners is to open a savings account or deposit money into your account at your veterinarian's office. Put a little bit of money in there each month to help pay for emergencies.

There are many benefits to eating raw, but doing so needs to be done carefully as well as not all foods are suitable for raw eating. If you are considering a raw foods diet, or are already on one, here are some foods you should certainly avoid or think twice about before eating them raw. This list is not comprehensive, and readers are encouraged to learn more about what to eat - and what not to eat - on a raw food diet if they are new to raw foodism using the resources listed below.

1. Kidney Beans. Even when sprouted, kidney beans should not be eaten raw. This is because they contain a chemical, phytohaemagglutinin, which can be toxic. Poisoning can result from eating as few as five beans, and symptoms will show within three hours and included nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Hospitalization is rarely needed, unless a very large quantity of raw kidney beans has been eaten.

2. Buckwheat Greens. Interestingly, these are toxic primarily to fair skinned individuals. Buckwheat greens contain the chemical component fagopyrin, which can cause extreme photosensitivity and other skin problems in fair skinned individuals.

3. Cassava Flour. Raw cassava flour can be toxic, especially when eaten in large quantities. Tapioca is one common food made from cassava flour, and should always be eaten cooked.

4. Raw Meat. Although some raw food advocates argue that raw meat can be safely incorporated into one's diet when you know the source is safe, caution should be used as raw meet can contain a variety of different harmful bacteria, parasites and even viruses. It is for this reason that many of those on a raw foods diet eat a primarily raw vegan diet (no animal products).

5. Raw Parsnips. Unfortunately, parsnips are one of the few vegetables that are best eaten cooked. This is because raw parsnips contain furanocoumarin chemical compounds. The juice of raw parsnip plants (especially wild parsnips) can cause allergic skin reactions, and also affect the effectiveness of certain pharmaceutical drugs.
